A friend of mine applied for a job and they took a drug test on her. She is taking Paxil, now she is worried that the drug test might come positive because of Paxil! Is that possible?!!

The kind of drug tests people are given when they are applying for jobs does not test for a drug like Paxil. It should not make her drug test positive.

Drug tests are intended to detect illicit drugs (i.e. marijuana, cocaine, heroin, etc...). Paxil is a prescribed antidepressant/anxiolytic, your friend has nothing to worry about.

No. They test for amphetamines and illegal substances like THC found in marijuana and things like that. With that said, your friend should be able, if questioned, to provide proof that she has an active prescription for any Rx that she may be taking.

thanks guys!
from my limited undergrad bio knowledge, i told her she has nothing to worry about! but then i did a search on internet and saw that there are cases where people had false positive drug test due to taking Zoloft( wait! was it Zoloft or something with Z?????), that is why i thought maybe it is possible to get a false positive! But it is good to hear that she has nothing to worry about! oh and she does have a prescription for it.
thanks again! 😎

That was really interesting, so I looked it up (plus, I don't want to study! 🙂 ).

It does seem that some SSRIs and bupropion can show up as false positives. Zoloft can screen as a benzo and Wellbutrin can screen as an amphetamine.

Drug tests are initially accomplished through an immunoassay and if something comes up positive that substance is then tested with gas chromatography mass spectroscopy to specifically identify the substance.

And who would have thought what I've learned so far in immunology would be useful?! 😀

wow so they really do use "gas chromatography mass spectroscopy " in real wrold.....i swear when i do experiments like that in lab, it seems like it's pointless and wouldn't ever use it in real life.

-Paxil is an SSRI

-I've always known it as "mass spectrometry", but I guess it's either one?

-Check out http://www.i-mass.com/ for some cool stuff. (used in airport security, bomb detectors, drug testing, estimating age of artifacts, etc)

👍

Generally, when you visit a drug testing clinic or specimen collection center they ask you to complete some documentation. In the questionaire, they specifically ask if you are "currently" taking any prescription drugs. If your friend answered truthfully, she would have nothing to worry about even if the drug she is taking happens to be a narcotic, as long as she can prove that it was indeed prescribed to her.
