I've always wondered how many applicants and med students have some sort of secret that if the adcom knew about would certainly raise an eyebrow and rethink their decision.

I'm talking about secrets like cheating, addiction, that time you maimed a patient on that sketchy mission trip where you did a procedure you had no business doing, etc.

I'd have to imagine everyone has done something bad. Be it cheating a tiny bit on an assignment, using study drugs without a script, saying something incredibly offensive...the list goes on forever.

What self respecting 22 year old can honestly say they've never gotten WAYYYYY too drunk at a party or something?

Yeah, this is probably incredibly more common than you would think. Most don't suddenly clean up and stop once accepted either.

Using drugs during med school I could see...Selling them is unlikely

Being a drug dealer is actually a lot of work lol

I used to copy homework off of my classmates in junior high/high school...with no guilt whatsoever. I always figured if I couldn't learn the material, it would show on exams anyway so it was a victimless crime to me...

Probably why the college/adult education model of homework = optional and only a learning tool worked way better for me.

I usually had no qualms cheating in non-premed classes. They were un-curved, the information I was learning wasn't critical to my education, and usually the teacher was insufferable. Unethical, maybe a little, but practically inconsequential

This. And then when I was caught in 5th grade and had to have my dad sign my homework, he taught me how to forge his signature. Parent of the year.

Never cheated in college though and certainly won't ever again. Once I got to the point where I could choose my own studies (college-level), time-wasting homework was almost eliminated and I was paying to learn I started to value the work I was doing. But in elementary school? Nah.

My secret is I am a goody-two shoes. Never lie, cheat, steal - - have been told I'm very pedantic.
But did enjoy wine with dinner at parents' home while under 21. Their bad, not mine??

My frat bro whos in md school now used to send me his biochem lab reports before it was due. Never cheated on an exam. Its too risky and not worth it.

Well, I've actually never had an alcoholic drink before....like ever. I know, I'm so lame 🙂

Hahaha Rachiie! Reminds me of when I did actually get caught copying homework in 7th grade. We had these things called Saturday Detentions, and if you had one, you weren't allowed to attend a school dance that month. I remember bawling my eyes out when the office made me call my mom...and my mom said she heard me crying as if someone died and panicked. Once I told her I got a Saturday Detention for copying homework, she was like " wow seriously? You were dumb enough to get caught COPYING HOMEWORK? You deserve all the punishment".

As someone who was in an frat as well you'd be amazed at the kind of people you will see get into med school. We had a kid who spent his weekends railing lines of cocaine and now goes to Columbia. Another guy was captain of EMS and used to call the first year trainees to care for girls that got too drunk at the parties -- these days hes an MD/PhD at WashU. Another one shattered a kid's nose with a headbutt, now he's at Rutgers. Id be willing to wager there are a ton of docs out there who's past people would find horrifying

Lol is elementary school HW literally the only thing you guys can think of?

How about that time when you got super ****ed up at a frat party and hooked up with someone you shouldn't have? Or when you "shared" labs with friends in other sections? That time you got away with something the police definitely would've been interested in?

I know I'm not the only one who indulged in the college life, cmon now!

Yes but if adcoms knew it would probably increase my chances of admission

There is an extended period in the late 90s, early 2000s that I can't put in chronological order. I have some incredible memories of that era, but the connections between some of them are a bit fuzzy.

I used to think that "SOB" was code for "son of a bitch," and not an acronym for "shortness of breath."

For ~2 years, whenever I felt like a patient was mean to me or unusually difficult, I'd add it into the chart to try and warn the doc.

He thought it was hilarious and called me a ***** when he finally found out.

This is absolutely brilliant.

No secrets. I was honest in disclosing some of my weaknesses and bad decisions, and hoping now that it won't backfire.

Thanks for rubbing it in. I spent 90% of my time practicing my instrument in college and never did anything scandalous. Do I regret it? Kind of. Now I definitely feel too old to indulge in that type of stuff though so I guess life just passed me by! That being said...I guess I had a friends with benefit-type relationship my senior year of college! Not sure if it's a secret though because he ended up as my significant other now... Ugh I'm so boring it's disgusting
