When you were applying for jobs after graduating from dental school, did any of you ever have to do a practical test for your employer before you were hired?

Yes I was required to prep a 3/4 crown on a dental mannequin, wax-up a complete upper and lower denture with festooning and perform a root canal on an extracted tooth of my choice.

Is this the norm when applying for jobs as a dentist?

Yeah pretty much the norm. You typically also have to do a bridge prep, a class 2, and class 4 on a typodont too.

The sad truth: generally speaking, all anybody sincerely cares about is your daily production $. Easy hire; easy fire if your production lags.
