Let's be honest here. I have tons of upperclassmen friends who say "just study. You have to be a ******* to fail boards. If you're studying, you're fine. The people who don't study fail."

Do you guys agree with this? What have your friends who have failed boards (the whole thing or just sections) said about their study habits and what they did wrong? What kind of people actually fail this thing?

By the way, I am feeling totally out of control, big surprise. I have SO MUCH TO LEARN IN 8 DAYS. I don't know jack about Micro STILL....need to review Path a lot more......haven't looked at Anatomy for a WEEK!!!!!

Do yourself a favor and think positively. This exam is not impossible it's very passable, you will easily score in the eighties with average studying, now if you go the extra mile and really put your heart into it a score in the 90's is very doable. Just be confident, you can do it!

sjdent, I think those statements are completely true.

I mean, looking at it logically, you can miss ~30 questions in each section (except DA) and get a score of 90!

It seems Part I is set up so that if you have a pulse at all you will pass. On the other hand, getting an exceptional score can be tricky. But passing shouldn't be a problem for ADA-accredited students.

You'll do fine! Honestly, you can learn everything you need to know about Micro in one day if you pace yourself and focus on key information. Don't worry about not knowing minor things. You have to realize that there are bound to be tricky questions on the exam, but they don't make up the bulk of the exam. Also, don't spend lots of time memorizing low-yield stuff. Give up those one or two questions and move on to stuff where there is bound to be 6 or 7 questions tested.

My view on the boards, PRAY PRAY PRAY and pray some more. I haven't put the time in that I should have, heck I haven't even finished biochem or even started dental anatomy yet, and I have my test on friday! I am going to go hard monday tuesday and wednesday, and slow a bit on thursday.

I heard from people that just want to pass that 3 or 4 days studying are plenty enough. Just hit the high stuff, as gavin said, and lose out on the low % ?'s. I have taken a bunch of old tests and haven't scored lower than an 80 on conversion yet.

I will probably fail a section or two, but again, I don't really plan on sp. so just squeezing by is all I want! Now the hands on boards, I want to light those things up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, guys. I guess I am a bit of a pessimist 😀 I guess I'm scoring OK on stuff (except for Biochem/Phys) so I shouldn't be so worried. But still.....massive brain farts could occur next Monday....

A thought popped into my head yesterday. When, in dental school, have I (or any of us) gotten below a 50% on a test? Well, I never have! Even when I SWORE up and down that I absolutely failed that Biochem test freshman year and probably had gotten a 40%. Even when I knew so little that I started laughing during the test. Still didn't fail with the curve. Gotta keep that in mind. Worst case scenario: you know 30% of the questions for sure and can definitely take educated guesses on another 20% to pass the damn test.

Still....who ARE these people not passing?

P.S: c132....oh yeah, I have been praying like I've never prayed before!! 🙂

3 people i know who didnt pass part 1:

2 didnt study enough (or at all really) and did fine in December
the 3rd guy just sucked and kept failing it, finally was dismissed

the last case is rare
i know LOTS of people who put less than 20 hours total into it and came out in the 80s

The ADA technical report breaks down the percentages of how many fail each year, and what sections they failed.

99% of the people failing are comprised of either: non-ADA accredited students or international graduates. That isn't a rip on either of those bodies, just a direct answer to the question.

If you eliminate those two groups, then the failing rate goes down to like 2% from 12% or so.

Is that from minority report? I only saw that movie once. That is what a professor told my dad's class in dental school.
