Do you think that being a immigrant...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you think that being a immigrant ( citizen now) might make you a more appealing/stand outish candidate for medical school?

post!😴

It can, particularly if you have language skills and cultural understanding that would make you an asset to your immigrant community. (This means you should target some of your application to places where your countrymen are numerous.)

I've also seen immigrants with Old World charm use their personalities to their advantage with interviewers who like that sort of thing. Ditto those who come from cultures that defer to authority/elders. (This can backfire if you come across as too passive.)

I guess it can hurt or help but you can't change it so don't sweat it.

Thanks Lizzy 🙂.
Thankfully i got a few fluency in a few langs from the area im from.. So.. SCORE 😀.

I think it definitely depends where you are from. If you're from Canada, then no. If you come from Mexico, yeah probably.

If you speak languages that would help you in America (mainly Spanish) that definitely makes you more appealing. But if you speak something like Dutch that is borderline useless here and you may use it 2-3 times in your career.

Im fluent in Russian and Ukrainian, pretty decent with other Slavic langs too. A lot of Russians on the east coast.

It's gotta be a plus if one's countrymen are viewed as an underserved population and/or one that's underrepresented in medicine. Or perhaps a negative if the group is not underserved and is overrepresented in medicine, as is true for some.

Otherwise, it may be just a neutral factor?

i imagine it could be helpful if you phrase it in the light of "i'm an immigrant and i want to help the underserved. such as immigrants". yay immigrants! came to america at the tender age of 4 😀

Being an immigrant can be advantageous one many level, in addition to the above posts, things like immigrant challenges, healthcare experiences in native country, cultural exposure etc etc can make u attractive and interesting as a candidate..

You could write about your war-torn country.

Depends on the school. The University of Washington appears to like immigrants, people who grew up or spent several years elsewhere, or anyone who has "saved a dying African baby."
