in public as in going to coffee shops, doing grocery shopping, etc

I don't know, even though I have a lot of school spirit, I never wear my school's apparel and I have no idea why.
The only thing school-related I used was the auto-up-down umbrella I got from CBS. I used it because I am too cheap to buy an auto-up-down umbrella myself haha.

how about you folks?

My mother bought me an engraved plate and a leather legal pad holder four months before I was accepted 😱. I have used the notebook around campus. Oh, and I decided on my school because I had already invested so much $$$ in apparel. ( Just kidding )

When I was in undergrad, my father bought a dark blue sweatshirt with a hood from my college and wore it all the time. Frankly, it was kind of annoying. Now that I am in medical school, he bought another dark blue sweatshirt with a hood, and he wears it all of the time, at least according to my mother, but fortunately, I am three thousand miles away and don't have to see him walking around in that damn dark blue sweatshirt with the hoody over his head.

i always do, especially because i hate dressing up. so i always have my school or fraternitie's hoody, sweatpants, t-shirt on. of course i wear appropriate attire when necessary, but i am usually dressed down.

I think it is endearing...

Unless at a sporting event or a member of the team (who gets the clothes for free all the time), I see no point in wearing your school's colors around. I mean . . . it's not like someone you have class with 5 days a week is going to say, "Wow, you go here?"

Now that I'm at a different campus (and we're not rivals), I'll wear stuff from my undergrad school. This means an occasional t-shirt I used to wear at football games . . . cough . . . and at the national championship. Hook 'Em!

I wore college tshirts, but I rarely wear med school tshirts unless I am at school or around the house. I just feel like I am bragging or something if I wear them out in public and I don't want to look like "that guy". You know, the guy that wore his med school badge out to the bar during your first social night.

I will always rock my alma mater's apparel. My med school's, not so much, seeing as they are bitter rivals and my family/friends would all disown me.

I wear my alma mater apparel especially during gamedays for football even though I am far away from the actual school now. As for med school, I probably wouldn't wear a shirt that says "University of X Medical School", but maybe something that says "University of X". I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing school apparel in public.

I wonder how peoples' decision to rock school apparel in public correlates with the prestige of their institution, or if this has an effect at all.

Went to UF for undergrad. I've always been a proud Gator, even long before our recent stint of mutli-sport dominance. I will likely be attending FSU for med school. For those that don't know, UF and FSU is one of the biggest rivalries in the country, and not just in sports. I will be proudly wearing my Gator colors even at FSU. Mostly because half of the shirts I own are UF shirts. Luckily, most of my FSU Med classmates are also UF grads...but when I venture beyond the med school walls, I may also need an orange and blue bulletproof vest...

I think it has more to do with if their sports teams are any good. (at least for undergrad, I don't know nothing about no medical school)

when im in cali, i rarely see people wearing csu sacramento or sjsu apparell around, but see alot of cal, uc davis, stanford, ucla, uc san diego, usc. enrollment at these schools are similar.when i am in new york, i rarely see people with fordham or suny apparell on, but see alot of nyu,columbia,cornell....even more from other states, such as dartmouth, penn and brown.

haha, so true, in upper manhattan (UES, UWS, midtown, etc), you see more folks with harvard or yale than actual columbia apparel

the only times I wore my school's t-shirt (which I got it for free) are when I run out of clean clothings (non-smelly to be precise)

On the other hand, isn't wearing your ivy league apparel around in public venues a bit douchey, like wearing scrubs or a white coat without reason? It seems like an overt demonstration of status in some cases. I feel that someone wearing their Harvard shirt to a bar would be perceived as an *** while someone wearing a UT shirt would not.

Only if there's an underwear run in Texas.

There is usually greater than a 75% chance of me wearing something from my current undergrad. Its not a prestige factor. I would say I have collected 15 free tshirts and about 3 free hoodies while here.

thats a double standard. they are both wearing their school apparel. one school just happens to be more prestigious. also, a person should never wear school attire to a bar.but, i get what you are saying

the columbia folk are concentrated to morningside

Perhaps it is a double standard, but that is not what I was getting at. I am just suggesting that this might be popular perception.

No **** it's a double standard, Drogba pretty much points out that fact in his post. Whether we'd like that to be true or not, it basically is.

And clearly you've never been to some backwoods bars in Podunk Town, USA. You'll meet some interesting people there, and it should really be a requirement of all college yuppies at some point in their life.

longhorns are winners. so i pimp my burnt orange all the time. :horns:

bruins are too. so i plan to pimp the blue gear come august as well. 😀

i bet its a good time at those bars. ive been to the artsy fartsy bars in the village here in manhattan..i think the closest ive been to a backwoods bar is in davis while visiting friends, and there were plenty wearing uc davis shirts, but i just assumed it was because i was in davis and it was a college town. dont fault me because i grew up in areas deprived of backwoods podunkness. and i hope you werent referring to me as a yuppie, bc i will hunt you down if thats what you are implying.

I do every now and then. If I need to go out for a few minutes I'll put on a school shirt.

I do know that way too many people were UT and A&M stuff🙄 if I see burnt orange and maroon one more time....oh wait, my roommate is walking around in an Aggie shirt🙁 nevermind

Well, my wardrobe primarily consists of Tshirts. So it's either wear my old school's Tshirts, my new school's tshirts, or...get some fashion sense

Nah I wasn't referring to you, just kids in general. I hope you were seriously kidding about the hunting me down part. Not because I'm worried you actually will, but because kids who talk like that are usually the ones who wear trenchcoats while creating Doom or Halo levels that resemble their school hallways.

Anyway, I was perhaps a bit harsh in my earlier post, but my point stands. Hope it wasn't anything you took personal.

I wear my Bama stuff around my campus, even though I don't go, and have never gone to school at Bama. It's really hard to get excited for the Death Penalty Universitie's football team.

that was hilarious👍 no hard feelings

You have no school spirit. LOOK AT MY AVATAR! :meanie:

No I do, I really do, some of my best friends are at both but I just stay away from the UT vs. A&M stuff. It's a trip in class when I go to neither school and classmates will wear orange and maroon and all the orange sit together and all the maroon sit together and the rest of us are in the middle😕

The texas vs A&M rivalry is pretty big but I dont really understand why A&M think they can compete. UT has higher admission standards, better sports teams and is in an infinitely better location. Frankly I think UT humors A&M by recognizing them as rivals.

Very true. I'd say our real rivalry may be with OU. Silly Sooners and their state of Oklahoma.

I have a couple of UBC shirts that I wear from time to time. I don't think I'd wear a med school shirt though, or at least not in circumstances where people assume you're bragging.

I went to a small college that no one would really have heard of outside my state (even in my state it's iffy), so I'll wear my old stuff from time to time since it carries no connotation. My favorite sweatshirt is an old beat up job from freshman year.

If I get into a med school it'll be at a college that's at least recognizable anywhere I go, so that'll be a little different. I might get a t-shirt or something, but most likely not one that specifies "College/School of Medicine"

The, "Wow, you go here?" part as your sittin' in tutorial with your fellow med students.... damn that had me spewing and choking on my coffee! ...as I lay here in bed, um, studying, yes... for the MCAT.... yeah right.

Anyway, maybe I am simply partially ******ed (I am sure Borntocut agrees with that statement), but that was funny as hell to me!😳

Yeah I do. I wear t-shirts with the university's name in it and I bought a sticker for my mom's car. (I'll get one for my car...when I get a car sooner or later 😀) I guess I'd do the same in med school. No reason. Just want to. 🙂

Of course...KU just won the national championship, so yes I wear KU shirts all the time.

Still have some undergrad shirts and hoodies. I also have a couple University of Michigan football shirts - the student shirts from the last 3 years, plus the Buck the ****eyes and Spuck the Fartans shirts. Classy, right? That's what I get for growing up in southeast Michigan.

However, at Penn, not only do I refuse to buy their shirts (it's EXPENSIVE), I feel that strutting around in West Philadelphia with Penn garb is.. douchey? If that is a word.

When/if I get into medical school? I probably won't buy the stuff either. I'll buy shirts/hoodies for my family members, though, but I won't wear that myself. No need to remind myself as well as the entire world that I go to XYZ medical school.. I'll have enough to deal with already

i think the connotations are different. a UT person probably bought and wore the shirt for sporting events. so when he/she wears it says, "i love football and have a good time tailgating and screaming during the game. my team kicks arse." everyone had one. then, inevitably a day will arise where you need something to throw on and pull it out of the closet.

when someone from harvard buys the shirt, it's definitely not to wear to the great athletic matchups that will take place on campus.🙂 so, i guess the question would be what is that person's intent when buying the shirt?

you can wear it to a bar. it just depends on the bar.

dive bars or bars that have a 100 beer taps on the wall. 👍

Let's not forget the two distinct benefits of avoiding those "XYZ School of Medicine" clothes while in public:

1) You don't get into those obnoxious conversations where someone applauds you on being in medical school, etc and you have to sit there all humble-like while they talk about their nephew who just failed out of college but wants to go into medicine.

2) You get fewer random people asking you about their medical problems.

oooh. . .

makes note to self

I own a few shirts and a hoodie from my undergrad and I wear them when I am doing errands, working out, yard work, or in the case of the hoodie when it is cold (I live in alabama, so not often).

I have a UAB hat (generic to the entire university) and a U of A School of Medicine t-shirt my dad bought me. I wear the hat often now that it is bright outside, but the UASOM shirt I only wear to do errands, yard work and work out in like the undergrad stuff.

I don't think I would wear my UASOM shirt to school, unless I just didn't have anything else clean. It seems kind of silly, because as Jolie points out, I am not supporting the medical school football team or something. Although I would wear my undergraduate school's clothes to medical school if they happened to be in the rotation and I felt like wearing a t-shirt.

I have to agree with many of the other posts...in undergrad I have collected tons of apparel...and definitely wear it to do whatever...but then again, if you live in the state of michigan, you virtually cannot go anywhere without seeing either MSU of UofM apparel...so its not as if anyone would even assume you went to the school....as far as medical school goes, I'll probably collect some generic school apparel to wear occasionally...but as others have noted, I would just feel like it was some pretentious display to wear medical school clothing...when asked, I actually tend to prefer telling people I'm going to graduate school next year (which isn't a lie!!) and just leave it at that...however, I have been contemplating getting car stickers for both my undergrad and medical school, and putting a "vs." between the two on my back window😛

thats a double standard. they are both wearing their school apparel. one school just happens to be more prestigious. also, a person should never wear school attire to a bar.but, i get what you are saying

A) wearing top tier school gear is bragging and thus not cool.

B) wearing school gear to the bar is perfectly acceptable if that school has decent sports teams

edit: top tier schools with great sports programs (i.e. UMICH... GO BLUE!) are acceptable for bar gear

I occasionally wear school pamphernilia (Ex: 1 time every couple of weeks), but I just wear whatever I feel like wearing in the morning, and there's little thought besides that. My school clothes are comfortable, and I wear them when I'm not trying to impress anyone.

I'll probably do the same in med school.

I have a ton of t-shirts and shorts from my alma mater, only because I played a sport, and I never wear them outside of the gym or my house. I just have a better dress style than that. Also, buying any sort of clothing that says "medical school" anywhere on it just screams of pretentiousness.
