do you wear your school's apparel in public? you planning to for med school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a ton of t-shirts and shorts from my alma mater, only because I played a sport, and I never wear them outside of the gym or my house. I just have a better dress style than that. Also, buying any sort of clothing that says "medical school" anywhere on it just screams of pretentiousness.

Why? I take issue with this sentiment that's been expressed by many in this thread. When I got into med school, one of the first things I wanted to do was get myself a sweatshirt. I've worn it to a bar; I've worn it out and about. I'm not trying to be pretentious, but when I was at my undergrad, I loved wearing the tshirts and sweatshirts for there because I was proud of where I was. Now that I'm into med school, I would like to wear garb from there as well because I'm proud to be going there.

Why is everyone so worried about what everyone else thinks? Wearing says that I'm attending the school of medicine makes me pretentious or immediately screams that I'm bragging? Maybe some people will interpret it that way, but to that, I say: I don't care! I can't help how people react; I can only control my own motives.

I totally disagree with that..What's the big F#ing deal? So what if I wear my Kansas school of medicine shirt? I'm not trying to brag, I'm just proud of my school and proud to be representing it as a medical student. Being proud and being pretentious are two different things. Those shirts that say "ask me...I'm are doctor" are pretentious.

Agreed. Although, I think those "trust me, I'm a doctor" t-shirts are a bit tongue-in-cheek. I know people not going to med school that like to wear those shirts.

I agree. From where they work, to where the go to school, to the fact that their child is an elementary honor student - people like to pimp that good things in their life. It's not really that big of a deal.

Unless it's something totally over the top. For example, at one school's interview social (school shall remain nameless), which happened to be at a local bar and eatery the night before, several of the students wore scrubs and name tags (and one even wore his damn white coat) at the bar. It was pretty shameless, to say the least.

About 60 or 70% of my cycling gear is from my collegiate team... so that's unavoidable.

I'll wear my college sweatshirt (literally the only sweatshirt I own) if it's cold and I have to run errands. I never wear college stuff around otherwise. I feel like people treat me worse, because they just automatically assume I'm a pretentious jack*ss.

Had the students maybe decided in advance to wear their scrubs to make it easy for the interviewees to find them in a crowded/strange bar? Just a thought from someone who has arranged similar gatherings in the past (although obviously not for med school interviews!) 🙂

You make a good point. But I don't wear any of my med school's gear. My father wears a sweatshirt, but not one that says med school on it, you have to draw a line in the sand and keep family members under control. I do wear a "Stop Pre" t shirt, but I did not go to Oregon, just like Pre alot.

iwhen someone from harvard buys the shirt, it's definitely not to wear to the great athletic matchups that will take place on campus.🙂 so, i guess the question would be what is that person's intent when buying the shirt?

Since every tourist kiosk in Boston sells Harvard shirts (the airport, the Common, Faneuil Hall, the Prudential Center, the Harvard T station, etc.), I tend to assume that the people I see wearing them around town are in fact NOT Harvard students at all...

If I do get the chance to be accepted to med school, I would wear the med school's apparel on and off campus, but not at bars or places of the like.

I wear my schools stuff around- I only have 3-4 school tshirts but I don't hate my school so why not.

that is a possibility, but what is their motivation?

"i'll wear this harvard shirt so people will think i'm smarter," man says as he's pushing on a "pull" type door.

about 4/5 of my entire t-shirts are maroon (if you know anything about the Texas Aggies, you would understand)

thats a double standard. they are both wearing their school apparel. one school just happens to be more prestigious. also, a person should never wear school attire to a bar.but, i get what you are saying
Yes, it is a double standard, but wearing my school hoodie is NOT going to brag about my intellect, whereas you could wear your Ivy league apparel in order to brag about your intellect.

I've got a few hoodies from my undergrad, and I have one hoodie with my med school name on it.

The whole purpose of school apparel is to show your pride and support for the school you attend or graduated from. There is nothing wrong with that, whether it happens to be Harvard or the U of Puerto Rico. That's the reason it sells. Nothing else, people.

Where are some of you getting all these ridiculous rules from? You wear the clothes to wherever you feel comfortable with them: bar, school, bed .....who cares..?

If you have a problem with someone wearing his school garb, that says more about you than anything else. Please work on your issues and stop being so judgmental...

at orientation they suggested it would be unprofessional* to wear our med school apparel to bars, lest our drunken shenanigans reflect poorly on the school.

*you'll learn that unprofessional is a 4-letter word in med school

Haha that's great.

I have a lot of stuff from my undergrad b/c I was an athlete and we inevitably bought team apparel all the time. Now that I'm in med school, I own a few t-shirts and sweatshirts with my school name on them - some say school of medicine and some don't. I have worn them out in public and no one has ever said anything to me. I don't see what the big deal is.

Very true. I'd say our real rivalry may be with OU. Silly Sooners and their state of Oklahoma.

I think so too. I have a friend there too😛 reunions during breaks are always a treat:laugh:

I have no issue with people wearing school apparel; if they want to represent their alma mater, then so be it. I'm not going to hate if you have a Texas or Harvard shirt on. I only think it starts becoming a bit pretentious when the words "medical school" are in big writing on it. There is no need to openly flaunt that you will someday be, or as most people will already think you are, a doctor. I've been in enough bar fights that have started over pettier things than this, once even ending up in handcuffs and jail for simply defending myself and my friends. I'd rather not instigate anything for no good reason and put my future on the line.

I didn't really wear my undergrad's stuff when i was in undergrad, but my parents did. I owned a few things, and my mom took my sweatshirt. She bought me another one after I graduated.

Now I wear my undergrad stuff more often. As for sweatshirts, my favorite I own is one I got as a freshman in HS from my dad's undergrad alma mater. They waitlisted me, but it's so comfortable.

My dad now tends to wear the med school stuff. He wants all the colors of polo shirts that the school sells, and my mom says he wears them all over -- to work, on vacation. And just like in college, my mom took one of my med school sweatshirts. They also both have my school's coffee mugs. Not sure if my dad wears much from his med school alma mater.

no
it's tacky
(at least for the school i'm currently at)

when i said that school apparel should never be worn at bars, i meant this for your safety. im sure in some communities or towns its okay to, but out in cali and manhattan, there are alot of pricks and douche bags at bars, and will start crap with you if you have school shirts on. ive seen it happen before, many times, even to myself once..other than the possibility of some ******* starting crap with ya, its perfectly acceptable.

Went to UF for undergrad. I've always been a proud Gator, even long before our recent stint of mutli-sport dominance. I will likely be attending FSU for med school. For those that don't know, UF and FSU is one of the biggest rivalries in the country, and not just in sports. I will be proudly wearing my Gator colors even at FSU. Mostly because half of the shirts I own are UF shirts. Luckily, most of my FSU Med classmates are also UF grads...but when I venture beyond the med school walls, I may also need an orange and blue bulletproof vest...

Not at all. Most FSU fans are actually a lot more mellow than UF fans. Gainesville has UF and UF, but Tallahassee has the government, so you see tons of UF stuff everywhere. Sport dominance or not, UF fans are almost always obnoxious with the amount apparel they wear. Similar to my school. (Not FSU) I've kind of passively mentioned I am taking some of the premed courses at FSU and every UF person goes "F$#$ FSU! Go gators!" and it is almost irritating at the point because I don't care. It is kind of a pointless rivalry that doesn't have much meaning to me. The rivalry is a lot bigger in florida. When you get outside of this region, it isn't nearly as much. Hell, not even the same conference.

I bough a gray tshirt with the school name from every campus I visited in high school, or if it was cold a hoodie. It was more of a fun collection thing for me. I've got something on the order of 25 or 30 schools now.

What kinds of bars do you hang out at where someone would start a physical altercation with you because you were wearing a sweatshirt that showed you were a professional student? 😱

I go out a lot, maybe 4 or 5 nights a a week, to a variety of bars (everything from sit down pubs to full out clubs/raves). The point is that even if there is a one out a hundred chance of some random people instigating a fight because of what you're wearing, I would rather go out and avoid it at all costs (which is not always possible because I had guys wanting to fight me for wearing sunglasses tonight - thankfully I knew the bouncers). Sorry for all the skepticism, but after being admitted to medical school and finding yourself in handcuffs for breaking up a fight on the night of your celebration, you begin to fear for your future.

Its kind of fun. It is a travel thing for me too. I enjoy seeing different college campuses. I think I'll apply to a ton of med schools just to jet set around and check'em out.

haha, i thought i was a wierdo. i always take college campus road trips. i enjoy visiting them. my last one was of the california schools this past summer..visited stanford, cal, cal tech, pomona, harvey mudd, usc. im going to do a boston/new england one next! i enjoy the open road. just my jeep and I.

Whatever. How is it not pretentious to flaunt that you have a bachelor's degree then? And no, most people won't see a 24-year old and think they're already a doctor.

I'm going to go ahead and say that the problem would not be the sweatshirt.....

Because a bachelor's degree isn't really anything special these days.

no, the problem is the drunk arsehole that wants to mess with you because of your sweatshirt.

Bingo.

You'd be surprised...My size seems to attract douchebags that want to fight. Evidently because I'm 6'5" the person has to show how much of a man they are by trying to beat me up.

Most places will just be harassment yells, which is kind of fun (with regards to the sweatshirt).

P.s...Noskill, I probably wouldn't try fighting you for wearing sunglasses inside, but I'd def. make fun of it. 😉

Unless your name is Corey Hart, they had every right to do so.

Verbal insults are one thing, but coming up and pushing looking for a fight is taking it too far, especially when everyone is just minding their own business.

Haha it was just a joke my friends and I did one night. We all just got dressed up and wore ridiculous looking sunglasses. It was a fun night and most people in the bar seemed to enjoy it, even buying us free drinks. But there were a few haters... I guess they couldn't handle just how ridiculously good looking we were.

I know. I've done similar stuff.

Halloween one year I spiked my hair, wore the sunglasses, shaved my chest, wore two collared shirts with a popped collar, gold chain, some torn up jeans and flip flops. Went as a frat boy.

I actually had girls ask what frat I was in, which made it that much more hilarious.

I collect leather notebooks at every school I go to... more expensive than a tshirt but they last longer and can all be displayed on a bookshelf. 😀

I also have a UVA Cardiology shirt when I did a summer program at their med school... and a VCU SOM shirt because i'm in their BS/MD program but I don't wear them because I don't feel like I've earned it yet.

However, not afraid to be proud of my undergrad school in public even though its basically unknown outside of VA.

VCU Engineering! baby.

Hello. My little brother wants to become a Doctor. He is 10 right now and loves Medical-school t shirts. His birthday is coming up and I want to buy him three or four shirts. I am having problems finding some on the internet. I was wondering if any of you could post links to sites that sell medical school t-shirts (the actual school). Also, I am referring to "X school of Medicine" t shirts, not the joke ones that say things as "trust me I'm a doctor"...etc. Any school that sells their t shirts I will be happy with. So far I have only been able to find one Med school t shirt (Harvard). Thanks....

wearing school apparel is a no brainer for me, for the most part, its free. Plus I have a ton of school pride. Gooooo scarlet knights!!!!

I plan on wearing apparel from schools that I didn't even get to. For example, I will be sure to get HMS sweaters to sport to every lecture and lab. I will also write my exams with a HMS or WashU pen.

If your little brother wears a Harvard Med School t-shirt to school, he will be in serious danger of getting his butt kicked on the playground at recess.

I understand the flip flops, but at what school do frats dress like that? That wouldn't fly 'round here.

Of course...KU just won the national championship, so yes I wear KU shirts all the time.

Haha, I actually wear KU or Kansas State shirts more than I wear my Wellesley stuff. 🙂
