Not sure if a similar question has been asked before, but do you work out regularly or play organized sports a lot?

Just wondering..

I try to swim for about an hour a day for at least half of the week. For the rest I lift or do something constructive. Having gotten ACL surgery in October, Ill be staying away from sports for a bit. If I cant make it, Ill do situps or Ill adjust my diet for the day which doesnt take too much effort.

I would go crazy if I didn't work out regularly during med school.....an hour break from studying spent lying on the couch watching tv or something like that just makes me more tired....

oh yeah, every single day!

if you find it hard to do it in undergrad, does that automatically mean that you won't do it in med school? I'm scared of this because I'm not motivated to do it because I have all these classes, but maybe if Im only taking science classes or if i'm not in lecture all the time, I'll have time.

If you wanna play sports, there's no reason not too. Make the time; cut out television or some other lazy habit.

You will most likely be less motivated to work out in medical school, unless you go to one of those schools where you have like half the day off everyday. I think the general consensus is that medical school is a LOT more work than undergrad, so if you aren't motivated to work out in undergrad, it will probably only get worse. (Unless you're one of those people that gets motivated to work out after cutting pounds of fat out of their cadaver or learning about how obesity increases your risk of getting a thousand different diseases). With that said, you can find time to work out. We have class all day, and I usually find time to work out for about an hour ~5-6 days a week. It's a nice break from doing work, I can listen to music or watch TV in the gym and think about things besides school. My recommendation is to find a hard-core gym buddy who will drag you to the gym everyday - then you'll be sure to go more often.

I'm kindof sporadic with actually going to the gym and yoga classes etc, but I play Dance Dance Revolution on my ps2 everyday, sounds cheesy but if you do the hard ones it totally gets your heart rate going and is a great study break. It totally perks me up and gives me that desireable endorphin rush without me having to be bored on a piece of cardio equipment for the same span of time.

I lift weights or do heavy cardio about five or six times a week. It used to be easy when all I had was school, but now with research and a few ECs, the day gets quite compressed. I certainly couldnt do it if I went to class.

My best friend lost 30lbs DDR-ing 1 hour a day for 6 months, with no other appreciable changes to her lifestyle. Is it any wonder that grade and high schools are using the PS2 to get kids off their butts and moving? I'm not sure whether this is a bad trend or not...but it seems to work!

First 2 years of med school I worked out 6 days a week ~1-1.5 hours/day. Was in pretty good shape. Made my workouts productive by listening to lectures from school during year 1 and lectures for step 1 during year 2. Also was single most of the first 2 years so my other sport was going to the clubs and bars in LA every thurs-sat. I do go to school that is P/F and we only spend about 4 hours a day in class.

3rd year a whole different ball game. No working out at all on surgery, ob/gyn cause I was just too tired. Working out about 3 days a week on other rotations. Cutting down clubing to none on surgery and ob, and down to only once a week on other rotations. End result put on ~10-15 pounds of pure lard on my stomach. Pants didn't fit anymore had to leave them unbottoned to fit, and get new belts. Was in the worse shape of my life. Also may have had some mild depression due to not getting good evals that I'd bust my but for (that learned helplessness theory).

4th year started working out 7 days a week. Lost most of the 3rd year fat. Man 4th year is the bomb, the ony thing that sucks balls is sitting around waiting for the match.

I have to work out regularly, or I will indeed go insane (and I get grumpy when I get lazy, too). I had gotten out of my regular workout routine for about a year (after surgery and an illness). But I'm back to normal, and I'm working out 5 days a week - 45 minutes of cardio (elliptical or spin bike), then weights and crunches. And I feel 100% better. One way or another, I'm going to find the time to continue this during med school.

While I do go to school at one of those half-day places, I think I have been more motivated to work out in med school just b/c I hear everyday how bad it is for you to be a lazy bastard. Seriously every disease can seemingly be fended off via exercise. After awhile you start to feel really bad if you just sit on your butt all the time. At least that is the way it worked for me!

i workout everyday. thats me in my avatar. you know what annoys me, those people on the elliptical that think they are have having a workout. lol it's funny to watch them on that stupid machine going at like a leisurely 1 step per second. it gets even more hilarious when I see guys trying to strut their stuff on this useless machine.

it's funny because I see the same people on that thing everyday and they are still fatties. when are they going stop being lazy and actually break a sweat.

w0rd.

1-2 hours a day on the elliptical, weights 6 days out of 7 (chest/arms/shoulders X 2)

The trick is to incorporate studying.

True; this also helps you not feel guilty about spending time working out. I usually bring my netter's cards on a big ring for whatever we're currently studying. This is great for lifting weights or doing cardio. I've just recently gotten back into training MMA and for that I can't study while doing it :-\

If I don't exercise regularly, I start to get very antsy(sp?) and cannot sit still or focus on studying.

So I don't play videogames pretty much at all, but I've always been tempted to get a play station just for dance dance revolution. I know lots of people who've done that with really good results. 🙂

I'm trying to get back into the workout groove with a goal of working out for an hour 5-6 days a week. I've not been doing it more out of laziness and getting out of the habit instead of lack of time. You really do have spare time in medical school.

I have noticed the same thing (hooray Rubin gym). I find it equally funny.

I actually work out about 45 min/day, 5 days a week on the eliptical, and I lost about 30 lbs. I don't know about the people going slow and taking their time, but I know I break a sweat and it's worked for me.

you could have walked and lost the same.

Cool. Just curious, but how old are you and did you modify your diet? My current opinion at the ripe old age of 30 is that you can exercise 'til the cows come home and still not see results if your intake isn't in check. At least that's how it works for me now. 🙁

how about if I really like playing basketball, that I wanna play it 3-4 times a week, 2 to 3 hours?

Would that be too much of a commitment..?

I try to swim 4 times a week for 1-1.5 hours. I also play intramural sports. As one of the other poster mentioned, if you cut out television (and surfing the web), you'll have plenty of time for other activities.

Some of the best advice I got was to get into a steady exercise routine before I started medical school. I quit not long after starting school, but quickly started walking every day once I realized how much it helped me. I hate exercising and trying to tell myself that I was too busy to exercise was easy, but it makes me feel good and gives me energy. It also helped me to get better sleep at night.

True, but the elliptical is low impact on joints. When you've had both ACLs reconstructed this becomes important. 😀

I really LOVE working out. I didn't work out much 1st year 'cause I "didn't have time." Now I have even less time but I make sure to go. It makes me more productive and improves my mood. If I'm close to test time, I take my pharmacology flashcards with me on the elliptical and quiz myself. The people at my gym probably think I'm nuts, whispering under my breath and cheering myself on when I get them right, but it seems to work well 🙂.

get into a routine
be efficient

i'm naturally 5'11" <130 pounds. i'm an easy target to get picked on. before med school i did effecient 1 hr workouts twice a day. i'm now 150; gained 20 lbs of muscle

its impossible to keep that up in med school. i improved efficiency. i do one day weight training, one day cardio, switch off. weekends optional.

BE EFFICIENT. two hours in the gym working out and reviewing notes? i can get the same done 30 mins of a focused workout and 1 hr focused review thereafter.

i make copies of my notes, laminate them, and tape them in the shower. its a quick review while refreshing yourself in the morning/post workout
i outline ten points, and repeat them to myself constantly during each set of a workout. "point 1 - 1 rep, point 2 - 2nd rep" and so on.

working out is a time commitment. work it in so u dont lose too much in a day. the key is to be efficient. don't be those *****s who spend 1.5 hrs a day chatting, "resting", watching tv, over-stretching. in and out is key.

the best thing is this is great for attitude. that adrenaline rush keeps me focused and efficient when i go back to study more.
btw - i'm down to 3 days/week at the gym. school, boards, research, EC. its getting a bit much, but i try to work out each body part at least once a week.

chest/tri's, back/bi's, shoulder/legs is a pretty good breakdown, every other day during the week.

good luck

Holy crap, I never thought of that... I might just do that! In fact, I might start that over the summer...hmm....thanks for the idea, psipsina.

Don't bother studying while working out. Give your poor brain a break. Don't be these guys 😛

I work out fairly regularly - there's a gym literally across the street from my school, so I just go after class and then come back to study. When I went yesterday, I ran into three other people from my class.

I do NOT want to start a flame war, but you should stop saying that. Changing the spelling of a word does not make it any less insulting.

On to the topic: I've found that I'm more motivated to work-out in medical school than I was in undergrad. It's a great way to relax after studying for a few hours and it usually gives me some extra energy to squeeze in a little more time with the books if I feel like being extra-productive.

I am totally those guys. I'm on the stair machine with my flashcards more than not. Except today, of course. Highs above 60 in March in Wisconsin? I went running outside in the sunshine. WITHOUT flashcards.

Depends on what I'm training for but generally at least 6 workouts a week but 2- or 3-a-days if it's competition time (most are higher intensity than you guys can handle).

Actually I used to consider my workout my "break" time, but since we started pharm I find that I can do flashcards quickly on the elliptical and for some reason the material really sticks when I do it that way. I used to only do flashcards on the elliptical during test week, now I average twice a week. It clears up an extra 30 mins later in the day for something 🙂.
