Does a high mcat disqualify you from DO schools?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Of course not.

So if you have a 30+ mcat, would they pick someone who meets their averages over you from the applicant pool?

I also had a 30+ MCAT and had no problem obtaining acceptance to DO schools.

Will it hurt your chances? No. In fact I'm sure it helps.

Wow, I think you need to re-evaluate what average means. With a sample of 100 people and a scale of scores between 0-100, there could be 50 people with a score of 100 and 50 people with a score of 0 and make the average 50. The math can also add up such that 100 people having a score of 50 have an average score of 50. So you see, I could keep on doing the math to make my average 50. SOO, averages mean much to nothing.

Plus, seriously, which school would select a less qualified applicant than a higher quality applicant? That's just plane stupid.

"This doctor did too well on his licensing exams, we don't want him anywhere near our patients"

Perhaps you are concerned with DO schools assuming that, with great scores, you are using them as a backup. If this is the case, then just make sure you can convince them otherwise. Shadow a DO, get a LOR from one, apply early, and know why you'd want to attend each individual school. They love great applicants who would be happy to attend their school.

Tnx for the feedback guys...My amcas just got verified and my science gpa there is about 0.4 lower than what I got when I filled in the DO application. Pretty weird after double checking them both. I really doubt my intro to geography grade brought it up on the DO side that much, since they consider earth science as a science, unlike the amcas...could they really treat +'s and -'s that differently? grrrrr

+ and - are handled the same. It's "science courses", the fact that math doesn't mean science to AACOMAS, and that repeated courses are only counted once (best policy ever).

That explains it...my freshman calculus teacher was some eastern european with the most undecipherable accent everrrrrrr...not to mention my TA for the dissertation would go through the steps to solve a problem filling up the entire blackboard, come to his answer and see that it is wrong, notice his mistake in the first or second step and erase the entire thing and start all over...yeah, that was fun, incompotence of the teachers causing my bad grade and sucking my GPA down big time 😡

So if you have a 30+ mcat, would they pick someone who meets their averages over you from the applicant pool?

Nope. Evaluated the same way as by an MD medical school. High MCAT = good.

I understand. Calc killed me too. Like I said, I know what you mean, but I would stress that you learned from your mistakes, etc., if you're asked about your repeats in interviews (especially likely at MD schools, since your GPA is lower).

yeahh...learned from my mistakes to drop a course when my instructor is a total tool not worth penny of the tuition. I ended up getting a B+ and B in calc 1 and 2 so no biggy. 100% the instructors fault the first time around 😀

So what's your plan for handling this when it happens in med school?

And what's your plan for explaining your GPA in your secondaries? Blaming bad teachers would be a great way to avoid getting interviews.

No, but your lack of common sense may be a deterrent.

big time complaints to someone in charge if that happens in med school. This time I will definitely make sure to get way more feedback from current students before matriculating. Back then it was stupid freshman syndrome. This was in the days before ratemyprof.com. Not knowing anything about teachers when you sign up for classes in the summer before your freshman year can have some dire consequences when you don't even have the traditional word of mouth ways of figuring out which teachers to take.

So how many threads on this site DON'T have troll accusations when people are just looking for feedback and reassurance?

You completely missed my point. You do not have the option to bypass crap teachers. You have to succeed despite them. It's med school, not Pilates.

:laugh:Point was loud and clear, you just like to argue. Wish there was a way to delete my account, people just prefer to put other people down rather than help them out here. Bye bye student doctor forums. good riddance

It's not the number of threads but rather what you write that will get you called a troll..... You asked if you get higher than average for DO if that would hurt your chances. You cant see how that sounds derrogatory towards DO schools?

I love it!

Oh yeah and congrats on your Nova acceptance. I'm a non-trad as well.

well said 🙂

OP, if you're not actually trolling and want a legitimate response, I'd suggest doing a search for similar threads instead of posting a question that belittles a group of people.

And in my experience, people on here have been nothing but helpful and supportive when someone asks an honest, non-condescending question.

wow jagger i am surprised you didn't pounce on the OP for this question. seemed just up your ally and i would have definitely expected a sarcastic remark. are times changing?

I think we're all a little beat down lately. I love the fact that whenever someone gets called out for trolling they pull the " You must treat everyone like crap. It was just a question" card. No, we treat you like crap because you're a tool.

The answer is yes. Nobody ever gets into a DO school with an MCAT over 30. I actually had to re-take mine and get less than 30 to be accepted.

It was a struggle for you wasn't it? You can't help but get more right than others.

I had a similar problem. My first MCAT was below 30 and my second MCAT was above 30. Thankfully I was able to convince my interviewers that my first MCAT was the more accurate score, and that my second, better, MCAT was just a fluke where I just got really lucky.

I really don't see what's so inflammatory about the OP's question. What's the difference if one were to go on a pre-allo forum and ask if a 38 MCAT score will affect his chances of getting into a less competitive MD school? Quite frankly, it's been asked there before, and people haven't gotten all pissed off about it. Seriously, chill out...

Every other question on pre-allo is stupid, so they're used to it.

You should try PBP (Problem-Based Pilates) if you feel your teacher is holding you back.

How on Earth would one come up with the idea that a higher than average MCAT score will disqualify one from an interview at an osteopathic medical school? I'm trying to wrap my mind around that thought and am genuinely curious what you heard that made you think that, so I can help educate you. The only things I can come up with are derogatory, but maybe I'm just being negative. Also, it's evident that, while certain past academic events might have been quite tragic for you, leading to a lower AMCAS GPA, some healthy responsibility and ownership of the issue would be helpful. You asked for advice, but you have to understand that not all of it will be what you want to hear.

Anyway, you can delete your account, if you want. Just contact memberservice and request it. Good luck in the application process. I'm sorry that you felt piled up on here and accused of being something you might not be. I've found that calling people out is not helpful. I'd recommend reporting posts, instead. Generally, people in this forum are friendly, helpful, and receptive, albeit sarcastic at times. We just don't have a lot of tolerance for some people, trolls, who come here wanting to poison the waters with their putrid negativity toward osteopathic medicine, usually in an attempt to inflame. Perhaps our radar for such things has been turned up too high, due to repeated attempts. Again, good luck, Sir (or Ma'am).

So many things I wish I could say, but use common sense. Why in the hell would you be disqualified or screened from DO schools? Do you think that poorly of them?

Hey OP,

Maybe if a DO schools let me in... You might have a chance to balance me out....

Drrrrr...

this is the best thread ever...diiiiiirrrr

I'm glad I have an unremarkable GPA to keep me in the running. *whew*

<---got 30+ on the MCAT back in the day

You are now disqualified from being a DO. Please turn in your medical degree and stethoscope. Don't let the door hit you on your way out.

So if you have a 30+ mcat, would they pick someone who meets their averages over you from the applicant pool?
No. All med schools want the best students they can get. If I was *highly* encouraged to apply with a 43 MCAT by one DO school admissions person, you'll probably be ok applying with your thirty-something. 🙂

HA ... no, times are not changing. I was in the middle of horrible studying and was on a 10 minute break. I'm always happy to be recognized for my sarcasm though.

No worries, TT had your back and came through with a doozy. For a second tho, neither of you had said anything snappy. It was like Federerr loses at Wimbledon and the whole world starts falling apart! 😱
