Does AMCAS include "Incomplete Fail" into GPA calculation?

Is IF (Incomplete Fail) calculated into the overall GPA? I'm not sure if all colleges have this but at my college, people who couldn't finish the class because of circumstances beyond their control get to ask for special permission to retake the class without receiving F in the class.

From the AMCAS site, it looks like an I/F (or at least an incomplete) is regarded as a D (1.0) but may be an F depending on the scale for your school. You probably want to hurry up and finish it to get it off your transcript, though if you're applying this cycle, it may be too late.

You could be hosed on this. It depends on how your college reports it on your transcript. If they show the attempt AMCAS is going to factor it into your GPA based on whatever letter grade your school assigns to an incomplete. The AAMC couldn't care less about extenuating circumstances. They factor in everything that is on your transcript, regardless of whether or not your institution has exempted it from your GPA or not.

I had fun with this nasty little surprise earlier this year. The AAMC's stated reason for doing this is they're trying to level the playing field, because they say that not all schools let you petition to have a grade exempted for special circumstances. I find that claim to be suspect, but I don't make the rules.

but my question is, if my college shows both the grade I got and IF on the transcript then uhh... it wouldn't make sense if AMCAS uses both A and F to calculate my GPA lol.

It would make sense if the course showed twice because if a course is repeated, both grades are calculated. I'm not saying that it DOES work that way, just that it would make sense. Here, an "I" would only become an "I/F" if the work were not completed in the following term. In that case, it would be the same as an "F", even if the course was later repeated for an "A". Both would wind up going into the GPA calculation.

Ronaldo, an I/F is different from a withdrawal. W's don't count in the GPA calculation.

oh I think you are right. since I've repeated the course the following semester and got an A, I think I should get an I instead of I/F.

I've already sent an e-mail to AMCAS and I'm waiting for the official confirmation.

My school has a WF and a WP, Withdraw fail and withdraw pass. If you get a WF its included into your GPA if a WP its not. I would suspect this is how AMCAS views it too, not sure

• AMCAS counts all attempts of a repeated course, even if your school does not.
• Grades of "IF" or unauthorized/unofficial/administrative withdrawal may be
treated as "F" in the GPA depending on how they are considered by your
school.

It's very likely that AMCAS is going to count your IF as an "F", or whatever your school counts that as.
