does anyone else wish race/gender were not deciding factors in getting accepted?

Sitting back and enjoying the show, till this gets shut down😀

this is my last post b/c i won't be at the computer for a while but i just wanna say that i'm sorry to everyone who has been offended by this thread... it was not my intentions.

I hope you work in an underserved area because it seems like you'll drive the majority of the population away with your attacks and feelings of entitlement.
Implying that the medically underserved aren't people? Confused...

🙁 Isn't one of the medical oaths, "do no harm"?

What about that poor dead horse you all keep beating? 👎

Its this simple. It takes either living through experiences that different races, genders, sexualities, or just being different people in general to completely understand people different from yourself. If not this, it take a lot of research and studying the environments and the situations that these people have to deal with. If you are not willing to do either of these then sometimes you just have to accept the fact that you don't understand. I do not think that adcoms are a bunch of quota filling, reverse discriminating bigots. What I believe is that they have done one of those two things that I said you have to do to understand other people. I believe that they have done some research so that they can get a better understanding of who and what they are dealing with. Peace out.

lucky for me, i havent taken the oath yet so i'm allowed to beat the horse

to mr. white male:

someone posted this earlier but i'll direct your attention to it again:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/07/e...&ex=1168491600&en=d4dbe47a90eb63c0&ei=5087%0A

basically, if race weren't a deciding factor whites wouldn't gain any advantages cause all the URM spots would be taken by asians. now quit your yapping.

Hey, we're pre-med, not pre-vet. 😉

What's up peeps.. I think alot of people don't know the legal definition of affirmative action and understand the segments of the population it helps...

disadvantaged minorities are not the only targeted population, but also poor rural whites and all women... PLEASE take a moment a google affirmative action, and read the definition... White women are examples of how successful affirmative action has been.

Before affirmative action was voted into law, there were barely any women in any professional (law, dental, med, etc.) schools, however, after the law was passed, white women became more visable in these schools and in variuos work environments... look at med school admissions now, 50% women.... and all of this happened after affirmative action was passed. I've included the links of some sites that express the legal definition. If anyone can show me a different definition, I'll truly welcome it....

It's getting to that time of year again, when people that don't make it to medschool blame their woes on URMs. :meanie:

Affirmative action should be class based. Not race based.

Before AA, URM representation was barely anything, e.g. representation of Blacks rose to 6% when they're actually more like 12% of the population. And after nearly 40 years of continued AA, Blacks are still holding steady at 6%, real effective.

[Sarcasm] When I don't make it into medical school with all my excellent stats, I'll just blame it on the fact that I wasn't URM enough. How could medical school accept another URM instead of me. Blasphemy I say. [/sarcasm]

How many URM do you know that are sitting around in class saying, wow, I don't really have to do anything. I'll get into medical school based on my URM status, life is good.

I worry about getting into medical school as much as anyone else, or at least I will in 1 year.

Everyone is gonna stick up for what helps them most. Minorities read this thread and say "quit whining, our ancestors had it bad so we need to have it good... even if we had nothing to do with them and whites and asians will suffer for it"
Whites and asians will say "we just want everything fair..." at least they aren't saying "we want the priveliges you all have" WOULDN"T THAT BE FUNNY!!??

Um, no. Not all of us. I'm URM and I'm not a descendent of any slaves, ever. Really I'm a first generation immigrant  But hey if my skin colour will give me 0.0000001%+ chance of getting in I'll list it.

There are waaaaaaay too many over qualified applicants, it's a total crapshoot. They could pick someone with the same stats over you based on the colour of your suit for cripes sake 😳
