I’m a graduate student in chemistry. After being in the program for two years, I realize that I cannot see myself working in the lab for long term. At the same time, I grow more interest for pharmacy as a career. I got my bachelor in biology and have pretty much all the requirement course to apply for pharmacy school. However, some of the courses I took back in 2006. Does anyone know after how many years we re-take the courses?

You don't need to work in a lab with a PhD in Chemistry. You have a ton of other options. I'm envious of your position. You can go into education, consulting, chemical sales, patent law, government policy, etc. And you're getting paid to goto school, right? Earning a $25k stipend per year vs. paying $35k in tuition at a pharmacy school is a difference of $60k per year. It's not worth the 1-3 years it'll take to re-take courses and 3-4 years in pharmacy school.

I can't answer your question adequately because I don't know how many classes you have to retake. But it sounds like maybe a year. If you're trying to figure out when you'll graduate with a PharmD, this should give you an idea. One year to retake pre-reqs and then apply to the 3 year pharmacy programs. If you want to specialize and do a residency, that could add 1-2 years. Realistically you could graduate anywhere from 4-8 years from now, but I'd bet on 5-7 years.

This really depends on schools. For example, South University requires 7 years or younger. However, there are still numerous schools not looking how old your classes needed to be. Best thing you can do is go to each school's pre-requisites section and carefully look at it. Most of the time, they will specifically tell you about it.

I agree with guitarmacy. Before you jump onto the pharmacy bandwagon you really want to consider your reasons for doing pharmacy and also consider the time and money obligations associated with that decision. Dig deep, consider your interests, and map out a plan of potential pathways. - At least that is what I would do. 🙂

Wow I'm in the same boat as u but rest assured, you may be ok.It depends on the school. campbell university (my first choice) doesn't have a stipulation on how old your classes can be, not even with science courses. U may have to do some research with the schools in ur area. I as well received a degree in 2006. So I now feel so much better knwing I don't have to take those classes over.

Good Luck!
