I feel like you're supposed to enjoy this course or find it interesting. But it's just a whole lot of minutiae and hard tests. In other words, it sucks. What do you think about microbiology?

It's bad but Picmonic makes it easier to handle

I thought it was interesting, but it was a ton of minutiae that was very difficult to handle in the 5 weeks we had for the micro block. I would have been happy with the same material in 6 weeks.

I like micro. Then again, that was my undergrad degree.

micro is important but the minutia they make us remember is ridiculous.

I don't think anyone in clinical practice cares that you know such and such virus is enveloped + ssRNA or that 3 of the 9 toxins for Y. pestis are plasma encoded, etc etc.

That's what the micro lab is for 😉

i like it!
i think it's one of the more interesting topics during the pre-clinical years.
good ol' platyhelminths.

I hated micro during first year but alot of is repeated in a greater clinical context in pharm and path.

It's interesting. Tediously interesting. You don't have to enjoy your experience in a course to enjoy a subject.

i started to enjoy micro more when i learned of the antibiotics

From reading a lot of things on SDN I thought micro and pharm were going to be miserable but I love them both. Details can be overwhelming but the general knowledge we become equipped with on these topics is just fascinating and powerful.

Picmonic is hit-or-miss. For some things I think it's amazing and super helpful. For other things I feel the pictures and crap are superfluous at best and counterproductive at worst. Especially when they reuse certain pictoral motifs over and over...I mean, at that point why not just make a chart lol.

Do you go to a school with 1.5 year basic science? If you do, I'm so glad to hear this! I enjoyed micro the first time around, but I think I would like it more if I knew how the dam body works lol (with regards to things like effects of dissemination and what not)

It depends on the books that you are using to study microbiology.

I use Review of microbiology by levin son and Kaplan micro. Both of them are very interesting to read and learn from.

I don't know, which books majority of American medical students use . Can some one please enlighten me ?

I'm in micro now and enjoy so far. But..... It's early.
