Hi, we're trying to figure out whether our school should give us the basic sci shelf for step 1 or not. The argument against it is that it would be better to take the test on computer like the real thing. The argument for it would be that it would be good to do if we couldn't buy the exact test and do it ourselves.

Thus the question, is the Basic Sci Shelf exam that school administer the same as the 2 $45 tests (CBSSAs) that you can buy online? Or, did anyone take both $45 online tests and the Basic Sci shelf at their school, and are all 3 diff tests? Thanks.

They are all different tests given by the NBME. Our school administered the Comprehensive Basic Science Exam (CBSE) on paper and pencil. The score report that you get details your strengths and weaknesses and gives you a rough estimate of what you might score on the real thing. The two $45 Comprehenseive Basic Science Self Assessments (CBSSA) are taken online via the NBME website. They give a score report similar to the one for the CBSE. They are helpful, BUT, you can't see which ones you missed or read the explanations. Hope that helps.
