Interested in primary care or EM specialty in the future.
Is it worth it to get my EMT cert and work as an EMT?
I ask because I am a non-trad and although I truly believe I'll enjoy working as an EMT, it may not be worth it to go through a program because I'll be giving up my current job that pays me well.

Worth it to gain some life experience/perspective and exposure to underserved patients. 10/10 NOT worth it to give up a well paying job. You can get your EMT certification and volunteer somewhere or work weekends or whatever, but EMS is a black hole of a profession that should be avoided as a sole means of income.

Was a paramedic during UG and don't miss it one bit. Got out really lucky to not get hurt at work. Don't think it would have any bearing on your future residency apps. EMT is on the list of 'jobs everyone applying to EM had' -- that or scribing.

I’ve seen it help and I’ve seen it hurt probably more so with medics than basics. I’ve seen former paramedics who come in as students with a cocky attitude who get shut down pretty fast so don’t do that. Having basic knowledge about what to do in emergencies never hurts just know your limits and don’t think you know everything because you don’t.

To answer your question: don’t give up a well paying job for an EMT job. Not worth it.
