i am indian and i hope to apply to dental school in the future.....i kno many indians (not american indians, im talkin ppl from india by the way) are very healthcare-orientated........many kids apply to med schools and dental schools and pharm schools so i was just wondering is it any harder to get into dental school since im indian?........wats lik the general racial breakdown of the entering classes for dentistry?........thanks in advance

Well, i'm east indian. My race never came up during my interviews. I doubt race matters. Race never hurts it only helps. If your Native american, black or hispanic, you will be looked upon more favorably. Everyone else is treated equal.

HAHAH.....this is a funny thread....anyways, Im East Indian as well and yes as an Indian, your nothing special when you are family functions and say you are applying to med/dental school......HOWEVER, the amount of people who actually get in is a different thing. I dont know about the US, but in Canada, there are not many Indian dentists/doctors as much as Indians (like my mother) want to believe...most Indians WANT to be doctors, but do not usually achieve this.

Anyways, to answer your question, no it will NOT hurt your chances of getting accepted. I went to 5 interviews, and most of the people from the interviews were asian or mormon......so as much as Indian mothers want to believe that Indians rule the world, this is far from the truth.

I like it how my Indian mother always used to compare me with her friend's children, and only 2 of them ever became doctors.....one other went to India for med school but got a nervous breakdown and dropped out...the others either dropped out of undergrad, work for banks as tellers, dealing drugs, or just doing nothing, yet she still tries to compare me with the only 2 (out of like her 1000 Indian friends ) that actually became doctors....it seems like because of these two successful Indians, that the entire Indian race is also successful 🙄

Its a frequent conversation I have with my mother to try to hammer the message that Indians are in no way superior to any other culture.....if there is any race that is the healthcare gods, its gotta be the Asians! I previously had a little trivia tidbit that the most common last name for dental school applicants is Nguyen......

Of course being the minority I knew all the other minorities in my class very well and we all symphathized with each other how the majority outnumbered us all. Next to that only one friend of mine or Vietnamese classmate had Nguyen as a last name and he was straight out of California.

I did not see many Indians at my dental school interviews or many Indian students for that matter. I was suprised. I guess it just hasn't caught on in the desi community. I feel like there are not many South Asian dentists in America period. But I digress...

Anyway, to answer your question, I don't think it will work against you. It's not like med school where there are tons and tons of Indian applicants.

Hey Avin I totally agree with you. Most Indian families believe or have some misconception that most Indians are doctors or like in Health Profession and like superior than others. Competition in India and Here is Total different story plus most Indians that make it to US are usually Better at school than average Indian student in India. I did my high school in India and I know that when I graduated in my home State in 12th Standard(HSCE) the result was 39% that means only 39% of those Science majors student will get out of high school and rest will stay. Its very hard to get visa to come to US and then green card so that means either your parents or you have to be very skilled to get the residency in US or Marrry the girl/guy citizen of US(does not happen that often) so chances are they are moslty good at their schools and are from middle class family. I always give my mom the example of people in India and say why there are so many peope don't even get out of high school that means there are so many more students who are not good at school or don't get enough chances than the ones who make it through college. You would rarely see and average Indian in US becasue chances are they just don't have enough resources or skills to make it here.
As far as admission goes in Dental School I think we are treated equally with majority(population in minority for all asians. only 10 % of asians in US live at or below poverty level which by far less that that for other races and asians are only .5% behind whites so that is why we are given equal consideration and I think is the best - from my writing class). I think you don't see that many Indian dentist in US. Mostly they want to go to medicine for one reason or another, if from south India then hi-tech or Engineering, or mostly own small business in US and rest do all kinds of jobs.

yes there appears to be alot of Indians in medicine but from what I have seen is that most of them come in as foreign doctors who have passed the ECFMG and USMLE step 1. Alot of filipinos do the same and tend to sit out and study for six months for the board exam since they have to compete with the US taught med students who tend to do alot better then the foreign doctors simply cause they have been geared for the exam for two years. My friend Praveen has numerous doctor relatives who had to take the USMLE five times before passing it and that exam I tell ya is grueling and is biased against foreignors in subtle ways.

There are actually alot more Indians in D.O. school than M.D. allopathic med schools according to my friend Praveen. Next to that they always reserve the best spots in medicine for US students and leave the psychiatry, internal medicine and some less coveted residencies to foreignors after the US students who didn't match have finished scrambling.

The voters are the users of the forum, most of them trying to get or already in dental schools as IDS students. I know it isn't exactly the case with the regular entering DDS class, but....

Btw, most of them are girls.

d have to agree with some of the info and disagree with some of it. Yes, Medicine or business is what most indians go to. I had a hard time convincing my parents that the dentistry route is good. But when I did I was suprised to see 10 indians in a clas of 100 at my Penn class. For the number of Indians in the country 10% is pretty damn good. Pretty much everyone of my friends is going the medicine route or already in. So overall I would say even the second generation indians are doing pretty damn good regardless of if they are going D.O., allopathic, or dentistry, we have one of the percentage of people in those schools for the number of people we have in the country!

I don't think it is harder to get into school if you are indian(or any other nationality). You will be fine if you have good grades, good DAT and some dental experience. I came from different country too and this fact was not even brought up during my interview.

Folks,you guys got it right and wrong.Well,color can be favorable and go other way too.I wouldn't be able to guess the dental school stats though.But dentistry on the whole is a white profession.Now ,I assume that most of you are undergrads and just in dental school.The fact is you guys have little idea of the preofessional world.Do not forget ,you are all a part of industry and not service,precisely healthcare industry.In the corporate world ,only one color rules and we all know that.
Now ,about Indians getting into dental school,Indians like to do things which are the toughest and poses the most challenge.This holds good to chinese too.That is the reason ,you see Indians coming out as doctors and most of the time domestic pressure demands them to do better than they can.Indians still are not known for their skills in medicine .There is another subject Indians are good at ..MATH..and that is why you see the tech sector dominated by them.The corporate part of the tech industry is still with the other color.
Being an Indian could be really an adavantage ,with the amount of succes they have been enjoying in the recent past.There is an enormous respect to Indian sudents and this is not because of Indian amercans,it is only because of immigrant students who come here and do exemplarily well.So ,it is hard to say what you will face.But ,,if you get discriminated ,do not be surprised at all.These kind of bigotry does happen too.Just pray that you don't become a victim.And again,this might not happen too,as this country is build on immigrants.

By the way I am Indian Male and i think most part you are right. But trust me who pampered the boy? - a woman and that happens. You may be the one doing it. It is like a chain and someone has to break it. I know that many of my relatives expect their wife to do all the work at home eventhough they both work the same hours. I think that is not equality between sexes. Woman need to speak up and tell their hubby that how about dishes today?? yYou know why we have lower divorce rate eventhough we have arranged marriage? Becasue woman tolerate everything that man does and never speak up and when they speak up their OWN PARENTS won't even support them. Indian culture is built that way except from some of the metro cities. You know how marriages work in India and when we moved in to US same thing started happening to me and I had to break the chain and not get married with someone I know just for two days or becasue my family thinks that is right fit for me. You have your way around this. If you really really concerned with the mother In law then get married to the right guy and forget about race, cast and anyother barriers bcz it is a bunch of BS. I think you are right about Dowry and more the man is educated th more dowry he is going to get BUT this happens now only in selected part of India. I still think this song by Kishore Kumar DULHA BIKTA HAI BOLO KHARIDO GE-- is true. Only thing can change this is education among woman. I have never seen a rich Indian guy with an average Indian woman but always has the cutest one.

I disagree with you on this one....the reasons you pointed out is the exact reasons why we Indian males are NOT lucky....I think Indian women are extremely beautiful, but I am never attracted to them....Indian girls are WAY too controlled by their parents and they accept it...this turns me off....girls will go WAY out of their way to lie to their parents.....Indian parents are very protective of girls, and if girls wanna have fun (via Cyndi Lauper), then they have to do the ole, "Im going to the library to study" lie, blah blah blah. THey never stand up to their ignorant Indian parents....

My parents tried to control me from Day 1, but Ive always rebeled and although it was a long road, I have finally gained marginal independence after they've realized that trying to protect me was not gonna happen. I have yet to meet an Indian girl like this...if anyone knows one,

Also, like BBgun stated, parents try and impose their traditional 1800's view that the woman must serve the man...cook, clean, AND WORK.....and for the most part, these Indian girls accept it!!!! For instance, my mother does not like my current girlfriend because I always cook for her and clean the dishes, and she always tells me that it should be her job, even though she is a guest in my house.....she constantly tells me that I have to find a girl that will cook and clean for me and I just reply with my jackass comments such as, "and maybe she'll churn the butter before sundown as well, eh mah".....of course, my Indian mother never gets the joke.........

I'm indian and i definitely agree with many of you in that this whole indian mentality of women doing all the work and "pampering" their husbands/significant others is ridiculous. I mean nowadays, indian women arent just stay-at-home moms but are actually professionals in health professions, business, engineering..etc... This is a purely uneducated stereotype. The last statistic that I read was that 38% of doctors in America are INDIAN. Based on that fact alone, I would assume that indians are known for their skills in medicine. For the same reason, we aren't considered for financial aid as underrepresented minorities in healthcare professions.

Nevertheless, Indians are still not a prominent ethnicity in dentistry, although the numbers are growing with every application cycle. My class has around 10 Indians, which isn't all that much for a professional program, but if you look strictly at medicine, many of the Indians you meet are pursuing that profession.

I agree that Indians are often known for computer science and engineering, but much of that is because large companies can take their IT work to India for huge financial savings. Even still, Indians aren't prominent enough in dentistry to suffer from any sort of racial profiling. It comes down to DAT scores, GPA, and the overall personality of the applicant.

I Will agree with Badvibes and other on this one. I am Indian male and the only reason I never asked any Indian girl out or even think about it is becasue of the control of their parents on them even when they are 22. It is like hard to find a Indian girl with Independent Mentality and standing up for what they believe in. My gf is not Indian and I had lot of problems with my parents just becasue of that but after 4 years in US they know that what they want is not gonna happen. I think that Indian girls are really beautiful but when you talk about relationship beuty is not everything. I really enjoy cooking and wanted to be cook but turned out it was my hobby I didn't wanted to be cook. My parents were really concerned about me cooking. Don't know why.
First of all most Ignorant Indian parents don't care or lenient about their son dating, partying and going out BUT they controll their daughter too much. It is like double standard. I mean they don't even believe that both of their kids have equal rights to enjoy their life. I don't know why that is but if anyone knows please post here.

hmmm... from what i've seen so far of the dental schools in California, there are more Asians on the whole... lots of student doctor Nguyens too, i agree. 🙂 My awesome mentor is Vietnamese, and man, what a natural. i am SO not worthy.

i only saw a handful of South Asians at the schools, and was told a few times that there are a lot of girls at my dental school who look just like me. That was kinda funny. Black hair, brown eyes, brown skin... aha! They all look alike! I sure hope i don't mistake myself for another chick! 😛

But seriously, IMHO, I don't think that our ethnicity affects our application. I also used to worry about it--ALOT--because these professions attract those from our communties like bees to honey. But for me, it was my stats, personal statement, volunteer experience, and letters of rec that saw me through. Put your faith in them. What helped me was when i got myself to start focusing more on my individuality and accomplishments, and less on how the ad com might view me as an ethnicity.

Right on dentalchica....when you have a couple where both are professionals and wiht busy schedules, the man has to learn to accept some of the domestic chores. I've actually seen an Indian couple where the husband works from home and takes care of stuff and the wife works during the week. And it's completely respectable.


As for whoever was bitching about Indian girls having to lie to their parents about "goign to teh library" blah blah (I think Dr.Badvibes)-yeah you do have to stand up to your parents but fi you have really strict parents and you know it would break their hearts then sadly those girls have no other choice. It's easy to criticize those girls-but put yourself in their shoes. Thank God I have moderately liberal parents so we have a really open relationship-I feel like I almost get as much freedom as my brother in terms of what I'm allowed to do. But I know girls from strict families and they can't tell their parents about a boyfriend (even if he was their perfect ideal) because they know it will equal problems in the family. I feel like some of you Indian guys are going overboard on the complaining of how much control Indian parents have over their daughters. I agree they do-but things are changing and so are parents.

Also, as for accpeting that "doctrine" of serving the husbands that our mothers give us-if a girl wants to accept that, IT IS HER CHOICE. we fail to see that ....a woman who chooses the domestic lifestyle is as respectable as a woman who goes out to be an engineer. But I agree that a woman should not be coerced into that...it should be her choice.

It's slowly changing with our generation, and it will change with our kids. I hope I don't sound harsh in this post....just giving my 2 cents haha. 🙂

Baloney. At my school (and every other school I've been to) whites (and by this I mean WASP/C) have been a slight majority at best, and before you dismiss me as having some "angry white male" complex, I'm Asian, so that doesn't apply. Even if you consider all Caucasians (including Indians, Arabs, Persians, Jews, and Eastern Europeans), they might form the majority, but not overwhelmingly so.

Instead of parroting some liberal propaganda, take a look around yourself sometime. The world is best seen with open eyes.

Everyone on here has valid points, I see a lot more minorities applicants than before, and a lot more minorities matriculating into dental school. Give it time, and before you know it there will be a flipside to what we saw years before. I think in about 5 to 10 years there will be less "white" applicants than other minorities matriculating into dental school and medical school for that matter.

Schools are all about attracting minority applicants, there are dozen schools that cater to minorities to go to there school, by offering summer programs. Why is that these schools offer programs like these???????

I agree that more marriages break in US than in India and the reason for that is woman speaking up for what is right and they are Independent so they don't need some guy that controls her or they are just not right fit for each other. Mostly woman in India don't want to get a divorce is becasue after that is very very very hard to find a good guy after that. This is not her fault but that is how the Indian culture is.

yes I am complaining but only certain things. I not only complain about girls but alos typical Indian parents. It is like I want a woman who has Independent mentality and stands up for what is right not what is good. We Indians always talk about what is good for the family, what is good for my kid what is good for everybody etc...but sometimes good doesn't mean right. You know most Indian Parents are very very good at making their kids(specifically their daughters) feel sorry for something that their kids do and they don't like. Most of the times they don't even have valid reason but they will still get what they want emotionally. I have gone through exactly what I am writing here. My parents controlled my sister too much and they already picked out the guy for her too but I told my sister you don't even know the guy, you have never met him and told her no matter what happens I am with her and she shouldn't get married just for the Happines for my Parents. It was something tough and hard to do for both me and my sister. Yes we had peoblem with relationship with my parents after this but after 3 years everything is cool and best of all everyone is happy. Best of all we all have our own lives and we enjoy it very much. And if my parents are unhappy(they have never told me in last 2 years) than that be it becasue they don't have a reason to be unhappy. They should be unhappy If I am ruining my life not If I have my own good quality life.

Also, as for accpeting that "doctrine" of serving the husbands that our mothers give us-if a girl wants to accept that, IT IS HER CHOICE. we fail to see that ....a woman who chooses the domestic lifestyle is as respectable as a woman who goes out to be an engineer. But I agree that a woman should not be coerced into that...it should be her choice.

It's slowly changing with our generation, and it will change with our kids. I hope I don't sound harsh in this post....just giving my 2 cents haha. 🙂

no, women that are house wives cant do anything themselves. women back in 1800's were housewives because there wasnt an opportunity to be professionals. but any woman in modern usa better work, or she is worthless. even working part-time is as important today as being a nice hostess was a 100 years ago.

In my experience, uh huh (HS, undergrad, whatever).

but that is expected, like hang out with like. If you're hydrophobic or hydrophillic, whatever, you hang with ppl that are the same so you feel like u got some inside track or whatever, know what im sayin.

jocks hang with jocks, nerds with nerds, partyers with partyers, wall street peeps with wall street, med with med, dent with dent.

But also.. most ppl have many friends and usually hang out with lots of different personalities and backgrounds. But.. it seems that its always safe to hang out with a crowd that u share somethin wit.

There were so many ridiculous things written in this thread I don't even know where to begin. So I'm going to just throw up my arms in disbelief at some of the things I've read. Many of the posters desperately need to experience social diversity in order to fix their misguided notions about ethnic and gender groups.
