For example, if an essay prompt says that you can write 500 words max on an essay, does it look bad if you only write 300 words?

If you were on the adcom, would you want to read 4,500 essays that were as long as they possibly could have been? If the content of yours is quality, the length wont matter.

Absolutely not! As long as you answer the question, I would rather you follow the rule of "less is more"
