Hello all, I am wondering if Microbiology fills in one of my biology requirements, My major does not require bio 1500 but it requires everything else, I took bio chem, miro bio, anatomy and physiology with Lab, do I need bio 1500 to fulfill the 1 year bio requirement? thanks

Even if it's not a part of your major, micro is still a prerequisite at a ton of places. Take it!

No, it's not a requirement for dental school, though some highly recommend the course prior to matriculation.

Im asking if I need biology 1, I took biology 2 and a bunch of other biology classes I was wondering if they would fill in the void for biology 1

Yes, you need a full year of introductory biology classes, unless you had AP Bio credit from HS. Taking upper level classes will not fulfill that full year of intro bio. I hope I answered your question.

Okay thank you yes you did!

I will paraphrase an email conversation I had with UT Memphis last year:

By the time I apply to dental school I will have completed an eclectic group of biology courses

Genetics and the Evolution of Life (1 semester w/ lab)
Microbiology (1 semester w/ lab)
Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II (2 semesters w/ labs)

As my plan currently stands, however, I will not have taken a typical general biology 2-semester progression. Given this, where would I stand in relation to the biology prerequisites?

And their reply:
We are glad to hear you are interested in the UTHSC College of Dentistry! The concerns you listed in your e-mail hopefully won’t be concerns after you read this e-mail.

The fact that you didn’t take a typical General Biology course but will take upper level division Biology courses is perfectly fine.

They asked me to save that email and remind them when the time came. But it turns out I changed my plans and just took intro biology anyway. So just ask the schools you're interested in.

This is just untrue. Search individual schools and you'll find tons of examples where micro is required. Although a lot of schools also only strongly recommend it.

You go to WSU right, nutrition major? Some schools will accept micro in place of 1500 and some schools won't. I'm assuming you are going to apply to UDM or UM dental school. If so you will need to take 1510, 1500, micro, and biochem ... they won't let you slide on those bio requirements. For other schools you have to call them!
