does online courses count toward med school gpa?

i have graduated from university and currently studying for mcat right now.
i have some spare time, and wanted to take couple of online courses at junior college.
does it count toward the med school gpa, i thought it does, but i kind of heard that it doesn't, wanted to make sure before signing up...

The best thing to do is to check the school's policies on their website first, then call and ask admissions if you're still not sure. You definitely want to be sure before you sign up for any of those classes. I was just about to sign up for one until I called my state school and they said they do NOT take online classes, no exceptions.

Did they only apply for pre-requisite classes? I'm thinking about taking composition 2 and some dumb intro to computer class online.

If your online courses are accredited at the collegiate level, then they will count toward your GPA; you will have to report them on AMCAS.

Now, whether they count to satisfy some sort of pre-requisite requirement, you will probably have to check with the school. Sometimes these types of courses are reported on the transcript with no designation of online/distance and they are indistinguishable from other courses at the institution.

Yes, it was just for pre-requisites.

if you take classes at a community college it's a red flag UNLESS you can justify it: friend and i both have taken them. both were asked to justify it. a financial situation is a fine justification and they won't care after you mention the money word. wanting to learn italian post graduation would probably be fine, too. but it's come up in many of our interviews and i wouldn't want to have to explain how i wanted to bolster my gpa.

also, your amcas lists your gpa by college year in addition to overall. do you think that adcoms are going to invite you to interview based on post bac grades at a cc? i don't think it could help... but what happens if you forget to submit a paper and end up with a C?

Mine all have- if they go on your transcript they should count...my school doesn't put on the transcript that is what online either 🙂
