Does this look like a scam?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you have to ask yourself "Is this a scam?" then it probably is.

I would be extremely suspicious of any honors or recognition that I had to pay for.

The legitimate ones should be free.

actually they are a real organization and do have chapters on various college campuses, but personally i don't really know if it's work the money. if daddy's paying, why not. otherwise? it's up to u.

I got one of those too, saying the chair of the chem dept. nominated me. Whether it's true or not, I don't know, because I am certainly nowhere near the best in the dept., and so I figured, not worth the money. Besides, you get your name in a book, and then what?

Anyways, I recieved a card in the mail out of the blue asking me to apply with the National Scholars Honor Society. http://www.collegehonors.org/ Has anyone heard of them? If they are legit, is it worth the 75 bucks so I can put it on my application?

If I were on an adcom and an applicant had one of these “honors” listed, I would see it a red flag = poor judgment.

My advisor told me that anything you have to pay for to be a member, isn't worth the money. Think twice before shelling out the bucks.

doesn't PBK have a small fee?
yeah, people are getting a little carried away here - you can't have much of a society without any income. Basically, I've heard that Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa are pretty much the only honor societies that mean much (at least at my school). Golden Key, Mortar Board, etc., are all not very selective.
