Does this look like a scam?

Bogus, not worth it. Certainly not anything you should list under "honors". Just a ploy to get you to part with your (or your parents') hard earned money.

I concur. None of those national societies are worth anything. Only if you have a chapter on campus.
I would be extremely suspicious of any honors or recognition that I had to pay for.
The legitimate ones should be free.

I got one of those too, saying the chair of the chem dept. nominated me. Whether it's true or not, I don't know, because I am certainly nowhere near the best in the dept., and so I figured, not worth the money. Besides, you get your name in a book, and then what?

Anyways, I recieved a card in the mail out of the blue asking me to apply with the National Scholars Honor Society. http://www.collegehonors.org/ Has anyone heard of them? If they are legit, is it worth the 75 bucks so I can put it on my application?
scam, totally.....

If I were on an adcom and an applicant had one of these honors listed, I would see it a red flag = poor judgment.
My advisor told me that anything you have to pay for to be a member, isn't worth the money. Think twice before shelling out the bucks.
Ask yourself: if you are such a good student, why should you pay to join to an honors society? They should come begging you to become a member.
doesn't PBK have a small fee?

yeah, people are getting a little carried away here - you can't have much of a society without any income. Basically, I've heard that Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa are pretty much the only honor societies that mean much (at least at my school). Golden Key, Mortar Board, etc., are all not very selective.BrettBatchelor said:doesn't PBK have a small fee?
Phi Beta Kappa is the only organization worth joining. For me, graduating with one of the cum laude's is enough of an indication that you're a good student.
