Just wanted to know, cause my friend introduced me to play world of warcraft just recently. Was wondering does anyone else that is in medical school play world of warcraft?

I played a bit in undergrad, and it got in the way at times so I stopped. What is your take on playing World of Warcraft?

My roommate failed out of undergrad due to WoW. One of my best friends failed 1/2 his classes due to WoW. These were both super bright kids (in the honors program). I think the smarter you are, the more addicting it becomes. If you're smart and lack self-control, stay away.
 
You have to know how to manage your time, and when to say no to playing. I have a lvl 80 and I am a consistent end-game raider. It's possible to keep up grades and play WoW, it just requires discipline. I've been playing since the game came out.

I actually did better in undergrad after I started playing WoW. I took a leave of absence while studying for the MCAT in summer 2008, though.

Edit: Should read the thread better before I post. Didn't see the "in medical school" part. I have friends in medical school that play. Both are doing well. I'd say it's do-able if you have self control.

I have a few friends that are in medical school that play WoW. One played regularly (including a regular raiding schedule) through the first two years and so far has had to cut it back this year (his third year) during his first rotation at least. One of my other friends really couldn't play it much at all, though.

I'm hoping to play it, since it's a great way to relax and destress a bit, but I have no idea how much time I'll have.

Woah, quick responses. Thanks for the advice. I guess it shouldn't hurt me that much if I try it out a bit. Hopefully nothing bad happens >.< But for now, I guess I would have to just see how addicted I might get >.<

Thanks for the heads up guys. Playing WoW in medical school, that is nuts lol.

if you never played though, don't start. Hell, don't start MMORPG in general.
 
i just started playing recently, though i've been playing video games pretty much my whole life. i'd like to continue playing but i don't think i'll be raiding 3x a week in medical school lol.

anyone else excited about star wars: the old republic?
 
I used to play it and still got good undergrad grades. And I mean hardcore play, like raiding five nights a week for four or more hours...

However that was earlier and all of my classes were A LOT easier. Now it probably would affect my grades.

Also, the new content SUCKS!!! 👎 So why play at all?

I have been playing Neverwinter Nights 2 to satisfy my gaming urge. It can be played online, but it doesn't require as much time, (no raiding, no fancy guilds and what not...) so you can pretty much go home, play for an hour and then go study. 🙂
 
absolutely addicting... i've already relapsed once... and since have quit again... LOL

it's a drug, stay away

It is not called called Warcrack for nothing. Don't do it, just spend your very limited time with the people who matter in your life instead. Or go find a 1st person shooter you can pick up and put down easily.
 
Actually, on re-reading your post: if you had to stop during undergrad, probably easier just not to start again.
 
Those games are addicting for some. Personally, I don't have time for video games. I will say this much, I would never be caught playing any sort of game that requires a monthly subscription. That's just crazy in my mind.

Also, I think a girlfriend is more fun than a video game any day of the week.

I get enough of staring at a computer screen at work.
 
oh my god... i hate WoW- i see it just like illegal drugs: if it's so addicting and useless in every sense, except being "fun" why would you do it??? 😀😀😀 jk
 
anyone who enjoyed video games before, but suddenly put it down and claim that it's not cool and need to get a girlfriend is simply not comfortable with themselves.

you need to be more confident about yourself and get a girl who's supportive about what you do.

medical school is stressful and you do what works for you to keep you sane. I played through 3 different single player game last week (my roommate could tell by the different kind of gun shots from my room)

A girlfriend can be more fun than video games! Luckily, these two things are not mutually exclusive so you can enjoy both!
 
I used to be addicted to computer games; CS, C&C, etc, but my computer broke and now I'm stuck with just a laptop, which of course is crap when it comes to computer games. I would play for hours and it overpowered me. I'll buy another computer soon enough and I'll once again be addicted. 👍

Take it from a very experienced person, this game will only get in the way. It will start off being an addictive game and turn into an addictive social network. I was hooked for ~4 years, raided 5 nights a week for about 4 hours (played for about 6-7) and was in a top 20 U.S. guild. IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

My grades steadily declined from High School --> Beginning College. My social life went down the drain and my overall health suffered (put on a lot of weight). I usually don't even get hooked to games like this, but it's the social aspect that kept me logging on each morning, afternoon, and evening. I tried to quit, twice. Sold my account the first time, I came back after a month or so. Stopped playing about a year later, came back after a few weeks. If it wasn't for me realizing that if I even get another B in Undergrad I can kiss my chances of a medical career goodbye I would still be playing. I sold my account, uninstalled from my computer, and use the extra 7+ hours I now have in the day to study/work out/socialize irl.

If you must play a game, play a FPS or something offline (Emulators ftw). If you have played the game already, you should know how affected you are by it's pull...if you even think that it might be too much don't do it; in x amount of years I'm sure you'd rather look back and say "Damn I wish I got an A in ________ instead of Tier 10".

Also, like someone said earlier, the content now just looks so boring. It's not a challenge, the prestige is gone. Go work on your RL M.D. title and flaunt that the rest of your life.
 
Hahaha, we are such nerds!!! pre med and video games, Idk if I can handle it lol. But honestly, stay away from warcrack like others have said, it is a game where you need to put in so much time to be "good" and being premeds we are generally competitive, thus leading to either dissatifisation toward our prograss in game (so puts in even more time) or quit. Pick up a single player game or shooters for multiplayer and be done with it. I def. support playing video games, but I honestly would say stay away from MMOs in general. Unless you have some amazing self control.

Not that I think hotness is really the most important quality in finding a good girlfriend, but you really really can. And MMOs tend to be fairly easy to get people into playing that are not otherwise into games hehe.

Maybe not the most important, but it's still very important, IMO.
 
Takes up a ginormous chunk of your time and adds nothing to your life. Don't do it. There are infinitely better ways to relieve stress.

Try heroin, less negative side effects.

And to the OP:

Yes, Warcraft can definitely get in the way. There are plenty of games you can play for an hour or two and make real progress. The problem with WoW is that you have to devote enormous amounts of time in order to succeed. That isn't necessarily bad for someone who already has a career, but it will be detrimental to you as a student. Also, to the people who claim that "its just a game" I have to wonder if they've ever dealt with a gaming addiction or know someone who has. Addiction is addiction whether it is drugs or video games.

Back on topic:
I'm an EverQuest fan myself. I tried out WoW but didn't really like it. But simplify is right, any MMORPG will take up a massive amount of time

I don't play WoW anymore, but I did for the two years before medical school. I also had a girlfriend and worked out every day.

So, you can do it too if you are awesome like me (or don't suck at time management).

the funny thing is all those people who play guitar hero or WoW wouldn't be considered hard-core gamers because that's all they play. As soon as those games pass, they'll probably quit playing entirely.

I play so many games now like sins of a solar empire, galactic civ 2, league of legends, heroes of newerth, left 4 dead 2, and batman arkham asylum.

However, that's still nothing compared to most WoW players who end up putting in crazy hours every week. There's no way I could continuously game 5 hours every day.

No offense, but I don't think Guitar Hero and WoW are on the same level of hard-core gaming. Plus, WoW is never going away. Or rather, WoW will die once StarCraft 2 is released (never might be sooner...).

I am a bontique gamer myself and plays every FPS game that comes out, even the really ****ty ones.

I have 2 1/2 years in WoW.

On reflection, I know it was a mistake to play in undergrad, and this is me talking just on a social aspect, ignoring the acedemic ramifications of playing this game every night.

I mean, think about college. When else in your life are you utterly surrounded by people of your age group and interests. You are in the prime of your life and any given afternoon you can hang out with hundreds of people of your major that you know. Yet many (myself included) played a fair amount of WoW in these years. 🙁 When I look back I would kill to be in a position like I was in college.

AFTER college though, that's a different story. If you're working a 9-5 job, then WoW is fantastic. Finish work and retire to your apartment, don a headset, and your know connected to dozens of people online who you are good friends with. You talk and socialize in vent as you go around doing random amusing things in game.

but I digress. WoW in med school? Interesting thought. Finding ample time to play would be a nightmare, but then again it would be a very nice distraction/break to be able to talk to normal, non-med-school people once in a while. If you can find the time to play, then go ahead. Just realize that you should be playing for the social interaction and network, not for the epics.
