Hey guys,

I'm a US citizen, graduated from US medical school, and am currently a "resident" (doing my 4 years of required post-MD training). During the final years of residency I can do an abroad elective for a month or two and I would love to spend some time in the UK.

Is the UK training system set up such that I could spend some time in a "resident" level position? (not a med student but not quite an independent physician?) I will have my US medical license at that point, though obviously it wouldn't do much good overseas...

Thanks for any help!

I'm not aware of any formal programmes as such - although they may exist. Having said that, I've seen plenty of 'Clinical Observers' about, although I'm not sure if it would be what you're after.

Maybe someone else will be better able to answer.

Thanks for the reply, Jonathan. I'm not sure what a "clinical observer" entails, or how hands-on it'd have to be to get credit from my training program.

From what I see of the 'Clinical Observers', they are attached to a particular specialty but don't get much hands-on work - best bet would be to e-mail some of the human resources departments of the hospitals you would consider working in and see what they could potentially offer you.
