Has anyone tried to take out a year of research during med. school with the program director just to get in. I'm thinking about doing that so I can get in at this place close to home but I don't know if it's reasonable

nothing is gaurantee. unless you have something in writing. you can work for him for a yr and still not get in (depending upon the competiveness of the program)

doing research with the program director is an excellent idea. it is well known that people get promoted, hired etc based on who they know.

of course it is high risk, since he may not like you, but no pain- no gain

It is high-risk. Don't take a year off just for the sake of getting into a certain program - make sure you love research as well.

Why not set up a meeting with the program director and just tell him/her that you really want to get into the program and ask what you can do to get there. Suggest research as a possibility and see what he says.

I agree that you shouldn't do research just to "get in" unless you really want to do that research. It isn't a sure thing and could mean that you've just wasted your year.
