I think you'll probably find more social epidemiologists outside of epi departments than within...I've met and worked with social epidemiologists in schools of public health, sociology departments, anthro departments.
With your background/interests I wouldn't be concerned about getting an MPH in epi. Titles are flexible, if your work is social epidemiology, then you can call yourself a social epidemiologist regardless of what degree you have.
