Well i ended my freshman year with a 3.18 GPA and i know by reading semester gpa threads on this forum that this isnt "good". Has anyone actually successfully overcome a bad freshman year?

Im not exactly sure how i did bad either. I studied very hard (20+ hours for finals) and i still ended up with primarily all B's. Can anyone share their study tips aswell?

Thank you.

Awesome story. Great post. Look thick. Solid. Tight. Keep us all posted on your continued progress with any new progress pics or vid clips. Show us what you got man. Wanna see how freakin' smart, solid, thick and tight you can get. Thanks for the motivation :}

ppl with worse freshman gpa's have gone onto do better later with a good upward trend to show to the adcoms. many ppl have done it and i hope you will do it too! keep working hard and maintain your integrity. 👍

Definitely. Assess why you were getting mostly B's (didn't study enough, didn't study right, etc...) and trust me...a 3.4 is definitely redeemable and can be brought up. Good luck! 👍

y so annoying

I had a <3.0 freshman year and got accepted. Despite a strong upward trend in GPA, it is definitely still tough.

I couldn't find the thread, but there is a story of someone failing 8+ courses and still making it to med school in the end. If you can do it is another story. Ask yourself this: How bad do you want it; how long do you want to work for it; and how hard are you going to work for it?

With your GPA it can be in the competitive range in 2-3 semesters if you get all As...

to tabascosauce: your signature severely contradicts your post.

everyone else, thank you for all the supportive messages, somehow i ended up typing 3.38 instead of 3.18; (ive changed it). Can anyone else share their experiences and study tips?

Seniorsquishie, do you have any idea what the thread was called? im really looking forward to reading the story.

Just food for thought:
(3.18 + 4.0 + 4.0) / 3 ~ 3.73
(3.18 + 4.0 + 4.0 + 4.0) / 4 ~ 3.795 (my sig figs are all off, I know)

And now you're competitive!

OP count your blessings..I just finished freshman year with a 2.0. I have to work my ass off the rest of my college career if I even want to think about med school.

The amount of hours the OP took/will take factors significantly into that, so it's probably not as simple as averaging year-long GPA's.

Whenever you post, I keep imagining that you're really a pink starfish who lives under a rock next to a moa head next to a pineapple under the sea.

It throws me off.

OP--nope, nobody in the history of collegiate level education has ever done this before. If you successfully pull it off though, young chap, I see a multi-million dollar book deal and possibly movie rights headed your way. Keep us posted!

Your math is a bit off as freshmen year is two semesters, so a more accurate assessment is

3.18+3.18+4.0+4.0/4=3.59 (Average and thus competitive)
3.18+3.18+4.0+4.0+4.0/5=3.627

assuming all hours are the same...

I had a 3.27 GPA my freshman year and I am finishing up my 3rd year with a 3.7 so if you are willing to work hard then its very possible. I have only had 2 grades that weren't A's (both an A-) but I have just put a lot of time in so its very doable. 🙂

I did it, you just have to figure out how to study. Did you study for 20+ hours total for all of your finals put together?

I wouldnt say a 3.18 is not too bad..you have many semester to improve it. I personally ended my first semester with a 2.86 :| and currently,as of today my overall gpa is a 3.44. I made a 3.97 this semester. use your "low" gpa as a learning experience. with that said you must continually improve your gpa each semester to show medical schools "the upward trend". good luck. its definitely doable.

hey gize, does diz work 2?

3.0+3.36+3.0+5.0+5.0+3.0= 3.59

Seriously though, I ended my freshman year with almost this exact GPA. I graduated with a 3.75. I thought my mindset of getting "only A's til I graduate" was far fetched, but it's possible.

My study tip is just to treat school like a job. Do nothing but school work and studying from 8-5 and you will notice a difference. You will have more nights off from studying than you used to since you are more prepared.

My freshman GPA was below a 3.0 around a 2.5 and I have came up to a 3.63 and am entering my senior year. It can be done, my friend, don't fret. Just work hard and you'll get there. 👍

thanks for all the support guys. Ill be trying harder than ever for the next three years. Im just curious, did you all major in something you liked or something that is beneficial? Also, how do all of you study? Im trying to revamp my studying habits.

Sig Figs don't matter here, and that is not how you calculate a cum gpa. credit hours/semester are important factors

I'm right there with that bud. 3.2 GPA freshman year, but I promise you this, I'll have a 3.7 by the end of my undergrad and I will get into med school for something else other than my URM status
