So I recently got a volunteer position at a retirement home/nursing home/rehab place. Since my mom knows a lot of the people there, they said that I could do whatever volunteering activities that I wanted to do, all I had to do was ask. I could do anything from playing Wii with the patients, 😎 , to anything else. My question is, what types of things should I do to get the most clinical experience. There are a lot of doctors there during the week so there is stuff that I could do with them, but I was wondering what ideas that you guys had. Thanks 🙂

This could be a valuable experience, but I would also try to get a gig in a hospital or clinic. Good gigs include patient escort at surgery centers, or look at a local free clinic where it is easy to have lots of patient contact because the need for volunteers is great.

I've actually done a lot of work at hospitals and have done patient escort, I just feel like I never really got much time with the patients because they were always worried about other things, so I thought that I would try something different. Do you think that following the nurses and the therapists and helping them would be okay?

Definitely. That's what it means by Volunteering.

Have you tried talking to the patients you were escorting? I've done this for a while, and most of them are actually happy to see someone other than a doctor or nurse poking/prodding them...I think it gives them a break from the whole hospital "aura", but that's just my opinion...most of the people I've escorted were pretty talkative and eager to start a conversation without being asked where stuff hurts and so forth, while others just liked to vent about the weaknesses in the health care system. Either way, I've had a good time doing it (but I can see why you say time is limited, less than 10 mins per person, but if you manage to keep them happy for those 10 mins they'll often ask you to pick them back up when their tests are done...) But helping nurses and therapists is absolutely a good volunteering experience so go for it

Does anyone else see this as "the rapists"? it blew my mind :|

Anywho, It would probably be in your best interest to just ask your mom or her friends, what they think is the position that can give you the most patient contact.

I find it hilarious that you have the Pedobear avy AND you noticed that.

Coinkydink?

I think not.

"the rapist".... well at least you don't immediately think of Arrested Development, "anal-rapist" for the duo profession of analyst therapist

Before I got this job and was a city officer I was frequently called to nursing homes to take battery reports. Surprisingly often the old folks would get in fights for the most obscure reasons such as one old lady touching another lady's walker. Keep your eye's open. Those should be entertaining.

Then again, most people on here would probably scoff at me over that.
