Dolling up.....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In undergrad when I lived on campus I was always a slacker. I would roll out of bed and go to class in pjs. Usually cow print or some other funky pants set. My Japanese professor used to have a ball with it.

I think for med school I will be a little more sophisticated. Only serious plaid pj pants.

It doesn't take that long to look put together - an extra half hour in the morning (or half an hour less sleep) along with a very automated and streamlined system keeps it simple.

I find ways to make things easier - for example, I got annoyed with my hair being out of place, so I got a perm - loose waves, I just run my fingers through. I wanted to have better teeth so I use whitestrips while I study. Makeup takes 5 minutes because I do it so often (although I don't have time to experiment). Also I'm so used to getting dressed quickly so I can come up with an outfit in another 5 minutes, 10 if I'm having a really hard time. So, trying to look your best really doesn't take that long, as long as you have a system for it, and make it a priority.

I have no limits to my self-depravity and leaving the house regularly in my PJ's (my gf hates this btw), well anyway, I was walking down the street to hit the grocery store one day for some milk for my morning coffee and realized that I had forgotten my keys... So, I had to resort to walking around the city (I lived downtown) for about 6 hours in my florescent black and green flannel Grinch Pajamas until my landlord got home that night... Now I wear nothing but plaid PJ's, just in case. 😉

That is awesome! Also, I have fluorescent grinch pjs too 🙂 got them from universal. You have superb taste. 👍

Go to Europe. You would think the girls plan to go clubbing directly after class- dresses, complete make-up, and fixed hair.

Oh very true.

My school is on top of a hill and you have to climb up at least 200 stairs, and then go straight uphill for about 15 minutes.
Now imagine doing that in heels............................at around 7:30 AM

I wish I was THAT awesome.

BTW, I'm talking about med students, not pre med.

I do like to dress up though, it just makes me feel more professional and confident.

I have tons of non-trads that are over 40 years old in my classes, and none of them bother to dress up. No offense, but that's not the best possible excuse for him, unless he's pushing 70.

However, I do agree that it's not a bad habit to get in to--just not for undergrad classes. Dress up for interviews, work, etc., but getting "dolled up" for classes is overdressing, imo. Looking clean and nice, however, is still a must in public, but few don't choose to do this.
yeah i agree. he should stop being uptight. i was trying to see it from his point of view. though med school has made me more hesitant to dress a little punk like i used to.

and speaking of europe, i just love the sight of people regularly wearing suits or stilettos and riding EVERYWHERE on their bicycles and not worrying about being sweaty in their nice clothes. sigh. i try to look cool on my bike here in america but its not the same.

ew, get rid of your perm! those chemicals are so bad for your hair and scalp and so not worth whatever hair society deems as "neat"

Hejman- i go to the largest med school in america.. that should narrow it down. i guess the large class number increases the number of beautiful girls.. i do have an arabic heritage (among other things). i guess i don't feel as pretty as i used to because of all the med school stress. lol.
but anyway, believe it or not there'll always be plenty of good looking people in med school. we're the cream of the crop, haha

i need to find a good affordable pair of track pants 🙁

whenever I'd wake up late before class or just felt like bumming it up, I'd go for workout clothes and athletic shoes. That way I feel slightly more put together than in my PJs (although if I had some snazzy grinch ones that'd be a different story!), and it usually motivates me to drag my butt to the gym. Win win win.

I like! Very sensible. 👍

I don't have much of a choice. I work full time and take classes on my "lunch break" so I have to go in my work clothes which = business casual. I live for Fridays when I can wear jeans and a t-shirt.

I was always one that would never leave the house in any type of lounge pant. However, I have slowly gotten over that. Actually, just yesterday I accidentally went out without a bra. I was going to get coffee through a drive-thru but it was closed! The nearest place was Barnes and Noble, so I went inside and got my coffee. I even went and picked out a book. I was wearing just a tshirt with my peacoat over it. I didn't realize it until I went home. Ahh!

My friends and I were discussing the concentration of attractive and athletic (as well as funny, caring, and oddly enough, laid-back) med students the other day. I don't understand why, but for some reason or another, there are many, many more attractive males and females in med school than in undergrad or high school (we speculated about the research saying that people respond more favorably to attractive people... affects the interview maybe?). To all you pre-meds, there is hope.

So what really bothers you? That they don't dress like "self-respecting adults" or that you might not be fooling everyone into thinking you have self-respect?

Because you're sure not fooling me.

Nice one, Freud. Am I in love with my mother, too?

Is your real name Patrick Bateman?
I do love Huey Lewis...😎
Endolas, I see where you're coming from. It's nice to put some thought and time into how you present yourself, even just for class. But I think that there's an unwritten rule in college that you can look slightly like a bum to class and it's ok...

I see where you're coming from, too. I just can't believe it's acceptable now to where pajamas in public. I don't consider that slightly like a bum. A bum wears the same thing to bed as out in public. That's full bum.

I saw a girl today, in my class, wearing basketball shorts around her thighs....she seriously was walking around with 90% of her underwear showing. the ****?
This gif is hilarious because 1, I'm mocking the fact that you "loathe" me (my e-feelings, oh noez!),

and 2, you are seriously channeling Regina George right now. I already broke the "only jeans or track pants on Friday" rule, am I only allowed to wear my hair up one day a week, too?

I don't get the reference but I definitely I don't care about your feelings. Just an opinion on an an opinion board :-/

Excuuuuuuuuse me for not getting myself all tarted up for an early morning science class. ..blah blah blah

Why is it such a big deal put on some real clothes? Christ, it takes 30 seconds. I don't care about makeup and **** like that. REAL CLOTHES.

you guys are missing the fact that endolas is a non-trad.. likely returned to school after being part of the workforce where professionalism (=dress) is important and denotes respect. it might be old-fashioned but..

I appreciate the sentiment, but is it really old-fashioned not to around with your ass hanging out of sweatpants? Jesus. Kids, wear a toga for all I care, as long as I still have to use my imagination as to what your privates look like.

Peace.

Kids, wear a toga for all I care, as long as I still have to use my imagination as to what your privates look like.
so now it's not a crusade against PJs but against low-hanging clothes?

and how's this for an opinion - go fck yourself you self righteous prick

You are cracking me up with this "REAL CLOTHES" nonsense. What constitutes REAL clothes to you? Apparently not sweat or yoga pants and a t-shirt, yet I maintain that if you rolled into class at my alma mater with pressed slacks and a tie, unless you were supposed to be presenting something and dressed for it, you'd look like a giant toolbag.

Clearly, these trashy people at my university have no-self respect. God... they just sicken me.

Who the hell said anything about asses hanging out of sweatpants and what anyone's privates look like? And why are you imaging other people's naughty bits... aren't you happily married? Shame! Shaaaaaaaaame!

lol.. ok most people agree with the exposed private parts thing (I hope people agree thats not classy or wanted that is).. but not all pajamas/athletic clothing is revealing.. actually a lot of comfortable attire is baggy! also just because someone wears PJs in public doesn't automatically mean they are wearing whatever they slept in the night before.. believe it or not people have multiple comfortable items of clothing and they change out of what they wore to sleep into... something just as comfortable. i agree there's lines not to cross (like.. slippers, bathrobes, being naked etc).. lol

Maybe switch to decaf...

I see you agree that it's okay to judge people by the clothes they wear. I negatively judge people who don't care about their appearance; you negatively judge people who do.

I don't know about the other girls, but for me it's a holdover from my study abroad. Seriously. In Japan, girls spent about 2 hours every morning just doing their hair and make-up - and that was before the 7:00 a.m. cutoff for breakfast where I lived! I had to spruce up or I'd get laughed out of the dining room. No joke!

But seriously? Once you've done it enough, it becomes quick and almost second nature. My morning routine is seriously: get out of bed, make breakfast, get dressed, do hair and makeup, skim chapter/notes for class, and head out. It literally takes me 45 minutes to finish all that. Of that, maybe 10 minutes is spent on my appearance. And let me tell you - I look good when I leave the house!

And really, I'm usually out all day, so it just makes sense to take those extra ten minutes in the morning to make sure I'm put together. +10 professionalism points right there!
same here. I was always taught that first impressions are everything and so I always do my hair, Im pretty light on the makeup because I look good with just mascara, but I full on style my hair every day. Its not even that hard. schedule: 5:30 wake up, go for run
6:30 shower, dressed, hair, nails, breakfast
7:30 out the door for class and I even stop off for a coffee if traffics OK.
I do it because I'm used to it and if you look good you feel good all day. NONE of the girls in my pre med classes bother with getting ready in the mornings. Seriously my cell Bio class is sad, and whats up with the pajama pants or dumpy jeans? Pulling on a skirt takes JUST as much effort. I HAVE noticed that there are a few guys who make an effort to look nice in my morning class.

Sounds like you're a real classy lady. 👍

Like you say, it's not difficult to be presentable.

Haha, I'm glad you got it.

Bateman: Is that the Ransom file? Thanks. Don't wear that outfit again.
Jean: Ummm...what? I didn't hear you.
Bateman: I said "Do not wear that outfit again." Wear a dress. A skirt or something.
Jean: You don't like this, I take it?
Bateman: Come on, you're prettier than that.
Jean: Thanks, Patrick.
[Phone rings]
Bateman: I'm not here. And high heels. I like high heels.

We're gonna need pics of you to confirm...

You either go to an atypical med school, or went to a reeeeeally ****ty ugrad/high school.

You either go to an atypical med school, or went to a reeeeeally ****ty ugrad/high school.

The former is entirely possible... we seem to also have a large number of former frat guys, sorority girls, and surfer types in our class, as well as a couple pro athletes (one guy played pro soccer and one girl was a sponsored snow boarder). Many of them played sports in high school and college; so, they kick butt playing intramurals against the undergrads and other grad students. It might be attributable to the curriculum style and the emphasis on med student health.

I think some people might have slightly lower meaings of what it means to be "dolled up". I put on a pair of slacks and a sweater instead of ripped jeans and a hoodie to go to work and my boyfriend was like "Whoa, why are you so dressed up?" :-/

But I echo the other lady posters. It does not take long to look presentable in the morning - 15 minute shower, quick blow dry, 5 minutes for moisturizer, sunscreen, eyebrow liner and eyeliner! 30 minutes. TOPS.

I never understood pajama pants in public though... Why don't people wear jeans? 😕 I don't find it any less comfortable. Only time I wear sweats outside would be coming back from Yoga/gym or going to get laundry. But I also don't get why people who are not stoned out Aussie surfers wear uggs.

I'm envious of you if that's all it takes to do your hair. Not even hairdressers are able to make my natural hair look presentable. The products stores sell for "curly" or "frizzy" hair are ineffective on my hair, and there are very few products designed for people of my ethnic background. Straightening isn't an option all the time since it takes me 3 hours (and it took a professional hairdresser 7 hours!). Just because my hair is sometimes messy doesn't mean I don't have self respect; it's just hard to learn what to do when you aren't the same race as your parents and the hair care industry just seems to completely ignore your race.

PMed you.

Haha, that's exactly what I PMed her about!

When do pre-med girls find time to look presentable before coming to class?

My Stats class has at least 10 premed women who look absolutely ravishing at 8 AM 😱

Of course, it helps to stay awake, as you tend to be more conscientious about your actions in front of such alpha females.

Do you guys have any personal accounts?

Glad you two have got it covered, I was about to third the suggestion! 😀

No kidding. There's this one dude, he must have his shaving scheduled perfectly so that he has exactly two-days of stubble Diet Coke Guy stubble. Wow, how does he do it! :meanie:

This is me. EVERY. DAY. Just add a pair of oversized sunglasses or hat lol.
But in my defense, I ride a bike to school and I usually do run around the football stadium between my classes (might as well since I'm wearing running shoes already). 😎

I swallow my pride and roll out to school with some nice sweats and a warm North Face. That's the way to go, baby.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:HAHAHAHA -- OMG :laugh::laugh::laugh:

Good luck in Medical School. STAY IN UNDERGRAD.
