DOs in Canada?

Are there any DOs practicing in Canada? What is the status of DOs in the Canadian system, and could a DO trained in America practice in Canada?

Would a Canadian citizen be shooting themselves in the foot by becoming a DO and hoping to return to practice in Canada?

To answer your question:

A DO degree will not be recognized in Canada. Any Canadian citizen doing a DO should expect to be staying in the states.

Can foreign M.D,'s practice in Canada ray ray?And can foreign medical students do last year electives in a Canadian Hospital? I have an uncle in Missisauga.

Regarding Foreign MD's

You can do your electives almost anywhere. And so yes, you can do electives at UT or Western, and most of the others, but practicing is totally different thing. It is next to impossible. It is a very complicated process. Your chances of not making it are 99%. You have to get into a residency program, and there's only about 15-30 spots which you have to compete for, and then there's a whole bunch of exams and other stuff you have to go through (oh yeah, that's just a brief overview, there's more problems about that). And on top of that, they do give preference to people graduating from U.K, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the States. But that doesn't mean, that they have it any easier than any other graduate, just that if they had a choice, they would pick them first. And also, your only hope would be to practice medicine in like Yukon or Northwest Territories.

Anybody graduating from a foreign medical school should not be expecting or hoping to practice medicine in Canada, because it is not realistic.

What are you people talking about? There are 12 DOs currently practicing in Canada. It's not much, but it's not impossible. Canada has a severe physician shortage, and it's thus not impossible for American graduates to be licensed there. FMGs are another story.

Well, I am a U.S. citizen with no intentions of ever living in Canada, but just to visit and do some 4th year electives. So I guess I am in good shape.

I was referring to FMG's and not American graduates. American graduates have it easier of course, but they still have to go through some stuff, like additional training and blah blah blah..And allopathic medicine is not very popular here.

And btw, it's been known for years that Canada has a shortage of doctors, but that doesn't mean, that they are making it any easier to license doctors.

Hedwig, thanks for the response (and to all of you out there), but where did you get your information? I'd like to learn more and maybe contact some of those 12 (wow, so few), and find about on their take on things.
