  1. Pre-Dental

Hi guys, new to this board....anyways i recently decided to switch to pre-dental from pre-med after doing a lot of shadowing over the winter break but was wondering if it would be worth it to keep my current major. It is Health Management and Policy in the school of Public Health. With this major, i can do all my pre-reqs for dental school (many already done...some done better than others 😳). I have the space to do a second major in Biology with a few summer classes (not a big deal to me).

I'l be honest, my primary major, though i really do love it, is sort of easy because of all the business classes associated with it so i was thinking i should add the bio major as well so they don't think i took an easy way out. Plus with all the pre-reqs with dental school, it would only be a matter of filling the core curriculum requirements (english, foreign language, etc) to get the BA Bio.

thoughts?

Oh and i had transfer English credit through my high school dual credit program, it transferred to my University so i was wondering if i should bother re-taking it?

Hi. Welcome to sdn 🙂

Anyway, to answer your questions. I think you should add a bio major because it will not only help you with the DAT but it will also provide extra exposure for you when you will one day enroll in dental school. Since I am a bio major, I have encountered classes like biochemistry and immunology, classes that are both part of the dental school curiculum. Albeit, the classes in college are very simplistic, but they still provide an efficient means of exposure. You do need 2 semesters in physics, 2 in organic chem, 2 in gen chem, and bio calc and stats if your a bio major. The first three are requirements for dental school. Also, I had one semester of transfer english credit from high school but I was given a letter grade for it. You MUST have at least one and possibly 2 (like at SB) semesters in college of english with a letter grade.

Thanks for the piece of advice, though i perhaps i wasn't as clear as i wanted to be. I have already takedn Gen bio, Gen CHem, taking Orgo II, will take Physics in the Summer, and took MCB I and MCB II (my advisor told me that MCB II counts as a biochem credit to most schools). To finish off the bio minor (not major), i was considering taking Anatomy and Phyisiology and Genetics. Basically i'm asking, is it worth taking the extra botany course+1 or 2 more bio classes+ like 5 or 6 core classes(philosophy/theology/literature/etc) or just settle for the minor and boost my gpa in other ways?

Thank you for clearing up the English question. I will definitely just repeat it then. Should be an easy A.

Yes, english classes are really easy in college. You basically just need to do your work to get A's. How is your science gpa? If it is good 3.8+ I wouldn't do the extra major. If it is lower than 3.8 (which isn't low by any means but lower than what it could be), I would add the major. Its just 2 classes and the core classes are easy. You do need 2 englishes. Plus botany is pretty easy. It looks good too to stand out. Core classes are also really really easy. I think you should go for the double major! But if your paying for tuition (at my school its over $35,000 a year), I would not pay for 9 more classes. That would be around $35,000.

I don't know, at the end of the day, its up to you. Have you become a better student from freshmen year and can now earn much higher grades to boost your gpa? If yes, go for it.

GL :luck:

My GPA is definitely going on the upwards trend, but sGPA is definitely not a 3.8. Thanks for the advice man. Also do dental schools care at all if you took like a 3D design or pottery making class? A friend told me that USC actually requires it. If i have to do that along with more English classes, a double major might be pushing it.
