greetings to y'all in north america... i'm one of those nutty down under students in Australia. quick brief--Oz mostly has 6 year undergraduate med programs, but maybe 3 or 4 USA-style 4 year post-bac programs, including the University of Sydney, where i just got in. SOOOO, for all of you upper class types who have been there done that, i have a question. i was accepted to start med school in February 2005 (which is the fall semester here--i know, it's confusing) but i really didn't expect to even make it to interview this year. who knew? so i've already begun this graduate thesis in venoms biology that doesn't wrap up until june. now, my supervisors' attitude is that i should drop the thesis, because it's excess baggage, unnecessary, and an extra year of time and work before i can enter medical practice and stop being a freakin' student. (although then they have to go find someone else to run this experiment. whoops.) my attitude is that a research degree is always useful, even if it's in science and not medicine, and that it's worth doing, even if it sets me back a year. that said... god damn it's hard work! a lot of moments when it's like, remind me again why i'm not going off to sydney NOW? so what do you all think? have you found that having a research degree in med school is a help or a hindrance? how bout taking time off between undergrad class and med school class? what about entering med school when you're NOT 22 and wet behind the ears?

opinions, flames, and notifications of insanity welcome... 😱

It depends what you want to do with your medical career. If you want to do medical research, then get the research degree. If not, don't waste your time, you'll be too busy to show people your extra plaque on the wall.
