Is there any foreseeable downside to taking an English that is based on analyzing Marvel comics? I would be using it as one of my English prereqs for MD/DO. Was just hoping to have a fun class that counts for something.

All of the required texts for the class are graphic novels.

It is listed under “ENGL”. Here is the description:

“Fantastic Four. The Incredible Hulk. X-Men. Spider-Man. Ms. Marvel. Black Panther. Avengers. Captain Marvel. Deadpool. For the past ten years, the box office has been dominated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But what is it about superheroes, specifically Marvel superheroes who have been around for over 80 years, that have captured and shaped the current culture? This course, like other literature courses, will focus on the varied perspectives and connections that these texts (comics, graphic novels, films, television, games, and podcasts) pose. This course will treat Marvel comics and characters, not as low brow popular culture (i.e. comics are for little kids -- *gasp*) but as literary forms that should be investigated. Thus, the Marvel Universe will be studied -- the structure, the iconography, the development of theme (such as gender, race, sexuality, justice, heroism, and so on), and investigate how the author/illustrator/director handle and manipulate the visual and written elements of the narrative.”

Thanks!
As long as all your prereqs are taking and you do good in your courses, shouldn't be a problem. No one is going to read the course description.

It only matters if the class can count for a major series or not. If the class is, then it's fine. So, there is a series of Organic Chemistry that is "basic" that is not considered acceptable as a prerequisite. If the genre class counts for an ENGL major or fulfills the general requirements in your university, then it would be fine. If not, then I would take a more mainline class.
