I'll be starting Downstate this year. Does any one recommend staying in the residence halls? Do they have high speed internet and cable tv connections in the dorm room? Is it possible to get a single studio apartment in the dorm rooms as a 1st year? I also have a question about $$$. What is the max a student is allowed to recieve for living expenses (not including rent) if receiving full finacial aid and goverment loans while living on campus? My main concern is that I will run out of money by not recieving enough. I will not be able to recieve private loans due to my credit history. =)
    Thanks

I interviewed and was accepted there and this is just from when I interviewed....they said no (unless married) you couldn't get a studio your first year. The students who brought us on tour also said that the rooms were doubles and some of the apartments were triples (1 bedroom + living room +kitchen) which made our entire group groan...something is said about internet connection on the housing homepage I think I remember seeing that it was internet connected. Right now Downstate is my first choice of schools I have been accepted....but hopfully in this h*ll year things will work out <img src="graemlins/laughy.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughy]" /> and unless your credit history is horrible, you will still can get private loans they will just be at an astronomical rate....

You probably cannot get a single room as a MS1. And, I have never heard on anyone living 3/apartment at Downstate (Mt. Sinai does that; info from schools confused?)

You will probably be rooming with another MS1 if you choose to live in the dorm.

The dorm ONLY has internet connection in the computer room; NOT in the dorm rooms. Rumor had it that the dorm rooms were supposed to be wired for Fall 2001, but it didn't/hasn't happened.

I just called the housing office at Downstate and they claim you get your first choice "most of the time". I then asked if that inlucded single studios and she said yes.

Nope. It's been tried by the current MS1 class to change the grading system to Pass/Fail, but I believe the effort ultimately failed.
