Does anybody have any idea whats going on here? My feeling was that they were going to relook at everybody after May 15, accept some of the "Hold" applicants, and then waitlist/reject everybody else. Any idea if there's been any movement??

I got a letter today that I'm on the alternate list.

I got the same alternate letter today also.

any idea if its a ranked waitlist or do they "reevaluate" everybody each time??

You 2 guys that just got the alternate notice: is that after being on hold?

what's the difference between an alternate list and a high priority waitlist?

I also received the alternate notice. I interviewed back in October and was placed on hold back then. I wasn't placed on the high priority waitlist, whatever that is.

whats up guys? this is a post that i found from last year's thread, hope it helps...

The high priority alternate list really does exist. It comes along with health forms, financial aid forms, a request for official transcripts, and a notice to take the American Heart Association CPR certification. The letter specifically states that "MOST" people are eventually accepted off of the high priority alternate list during the spring and summer months. It also states that preference for the people on this list are given to those who submit all official transcripts and also "clear" themselves with the Student Health Service (a very arduous task in which you need to complete all the immunization forms, as well as visit your doctor for a physical and a bunch of lab tests). If you're born outside the U.S. like I am, then you need to actually get a 2nd TB test done at the Student Health Service at Downstate in order to get "cleared". I made two 7-hour roundtrip drives to Brooklyn to get this done: one day to get the TB shot, and another day to get it read. Why? So that I could get "cleared" by the Student Health Service and thereby get preference in admissions off of the high priority alternate list. I was accepted ten days later. I don't know if my efforts helped any in the admissions decision, but I wasn't going to take any chances. You really have to want it.

As for those of you that were put on hold, waitlist, hold changed to waitlist/alternate......if your letter doesn't specifically say "high priority alternate list", then you're not on it. Of course, I don't know if they are still adding to the h.p.a. list or not. Could be that the list was made early in the spring as a one-time thing. Once that list is exhausted, Downstate would probably then go to the normal waitlist/alternate list. In the end, I hear from current students at Downstate that the turnover rate is extremely high and that many, many people eventually decide to go to other schools. Good news for anybody waiting for admission, doesn't matter what list you are on!

i got some package today and from what my parents said it read alternate list but it has the same forms as all of you on the so called high priority list are talkin about. plus i just called the admissions office. and he didnt mention anything about high priority. the guy said once the class is filled we put people on the alternate list. and those on the alternate list are those students who we unfortunately were unable to give admissions because the class was full. the forms are there because we want to speed up the process in case you are offered admissions. from past years he said most people do get off the alternate list and given admission. and he said the admissions committee will rereview applicants who have turned in the form sayin they would like to stay on the list. and from this list they will offer acceptances if there are openings. he also said it would be wise to turn in your stuff as soon as possible and that if there is something new to your app then also send it. so i dont know what's the deal goin on with this high priority stuff. but from what it seemed there was just an alternate list..who knows..but just tellin you what the admissions guy told me.

Greetings All,

I have a general question, hopefully this will clarify the high priority / alternate issue.

Did everyone who received the ?plain alternate list? correspondence also receive all the health and financial aid forms? Or did you just receive a letter?

Good luck to all,
yodaf

I received the "plain alternate list" package which included all of the health forms and financial aid forms.

I'm planning on going to the admissions office sometime next week, so hopefully I will be able to squeeze out some definitive information about the waitlist.

in reading last year's thread, i think the alternate list comes with all the health forms, etc, as does the high priority waitlist. they probably do this in case people are accepted late into the process...

aight we shouldnt really go by last year's threads because it might have changed. now apparently there are people that got a high priority and some who just got alternate. i posted this earlier but when i called the guy made it see there was now just an alternate list and that a lot of people get off this list. maybe this high priority thing was early on..but if you look on downstate's website they also only say alternate list. also i feel that if those on the alternate list were gonna be accpeted after the high priority list was exhausted wouldnt they also mention this to us. instead of sayin if a spot is open in the class those on the list maybe accpeted. i dont know whatever. i guess we wait it out.

High priorities have been accepted already.

A friend of mine got his acceptance letter on the 13th

Hey Everyone,

I'm on the High Priority Waitlist, I was put on it at the beginning of April. Someone from the office told me that the lists are unranked. From reading other threads, I know that the HPL is moving. Next Tuesday I will be going into the office to get some information, I'll let you all know what I find out.

Keep the hope alive! 👍

bpn0912,

Did you receive the same alternate list paperwork this week from Downstate, or did they send that to you when you were placed on the high priority waitlist back in April?

i still havent heard a thing from downstate since the "hold" letter.....i wonder what this means...

Me neither. Interviewed in late Feb, put on hold a bit later, and on hold ever since.

nucat03,

I received that paperwork back in April. But today I got a call from the secretary, Ilana Levine, offering me a spot. 😀 So the lists are moving!!! Hope you and everyone else gets good news soon! :luck:

Great news bpn! Congratulations! BTW, how quickly did you send in all of the paperwork after receiving it in April? And how much time are you given to either accept or reject your place in the class? Thanks for answering all these questions!

any one know if the high priority list is exhausted so that those on the alternate list may start to have some movement.

Hi nucat03,

I sent in the health forms at the end of April. As for the transcripts, I waited until Spring semester ended to send in my transcript for grad school. Actually that was sent on May 21st. I didn't realize that we had to send in another undergrad transcript because I thought they had it already, they sent me an email saying that I was missing the undergrad transcript last week. So I sent that one last week. (I am pretty sure they didn't even get that one yet because my undergrad school is SLOW).
And to answer your question about how fast you have to make your decision....actually immediately....when she called she wanted to know if I was accepted elsewhere when I said yes, she wanted to know if I was still interested in Downstate. Only then did she offer the spot, and she told me that she would call SUNY Buffalo to tell them that I will withdraw my spot.
I think that if they want your decision that fast, it's a good indicator that the waitlists are gonna move fast which is GOOD!
Hope this helps 👍

bpn,

Yes, you have been very helpful! Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions, and please let us know if you find out any more info about the Downstate waitlist situation.

No problem. If I don't get any more info, I suggest emailing Ms. Levine. She's really helpful. Good Luck.

i am also wondering about alternate list movement.

I'm planning on handing my forms in person tomorrow and also finding out what the deal is so i'll pass the info along.

hey sounds good vgirl..let us all know what the deal is

So i went to downstate today.

They told me absolutely nothing. I talked to the director of admissions and even he couldn't give me a time frame as to when the alternate list should start moving or even if it started moving. Basically they just told me to wait and to go along with whatever i'm doing. They were too cryptic and made me feel like i was bothering them even though i've been accepted to two other schools months ago. Sorry i couldn't give any more info kids.

Hey guys don't give up! I was on regular hold since january and received my alternate list packet on may 25th. I havent filled out all the files yet and wasnt even sure they received my confirmation of being on the alternate list - but today Ms. Levine called and offered me a spot!!! So hang in there, i hope to see you guys all next year :luck: :luck: :luck:

Awesome news palatanmr6! Congrats! Did you have to give Ms. Levine a firm answer on the phone, or do they give you time to think it over (or were you just so excited that you said yes right away!)?

Thanks nucat03! I said yes right away in a moment of excitement, but she did say that after i receive the paperwork in about a week i still have two weeks to decide... so i guess the option is open to everyone. :luck:

Hi again, did Ms. Levine say anything else of interest on the phone? Just wondering...

out of curiousity, is there a reason why we have to resend all of our transcripts? or am i just reading the letter wrong?

We never sent them our transcripts before. You only send the official transcript to the AMCAS people, and the individual schools receive our grades from that. Downstate is now asking for the official transcript probably because all schools require a copy before you matriculate (just to make sure that you have completed all pre-reqs and have graduated from college).

hey congrats palatanmr6...this means that the alternate list is probably starting to move. you were on the alternate list right not the high priority one...just to make sure...hey palatanmr6 what date does it say on your alternate list letter. im just wondering cause i received mine right around the same time and its dated May 21. im not sure how this list works. but hopefully ill be hearing something really soon. gotta hope and pray. good luck to the rest of you out there.

Hey I was wondering if someone could help me:

I've been on 'hold' since March. How is it that people are already getting accepted from the alternative lists, if they still have not made a decision on the 'hold' category. Isn't the 'hold' category the people on whom decisions could not have been made because all spots were full? I can't resolve the paradox.

I dropped by the admissions office yesterday to submit some paperwork and try and squeeze out some info on the alternate list; well I got absolutely nothing. All I was told was that the list is unranked and reviewed often. I guess it's pretty much a lottery now, who knows. Anyway good luck to all.

BTW. I'm on the regular alternate list, the admissions person denied that there are two waitlists. I guess maybe they have already exhausted the High Priority list, again who knows.

Sorry just saw the post now - when she called and introduced herself i knew who she was thanks to SDN. then she asked if i had been accepted anywhere else, i said no (no need to lie here since i bet she has your file in front of her) and she asked if i am still interested and when i said i was she offered the spot. nothing particularly extra was said, but i think she is going through the list of alternates now (i wasnt on the H.P.A or anything like that).

beastmaster, i think the idea is that from hold they decide whether to place you on the alternate list and then they make another decision to accept off the alternate list. its a silly process i agree - i hope you get the paperwork for alternate list soon (maybe the mailman stole it?)

i am rooting for you all! :luck:

Hi,
I have been on the High Priority list since the beginning of April and I have yet to get a call from Downstate, so that must mean that they take people from both of the lists at the same time and there really isn't an order.
I had sent in all of my health forms by the end of April, but since I only graduated on the 21st I haven't been able to get them a transcript, so I don't think it has anything to do with that.
Good luck to all...

bump bump bump

to people still hanging on, no worries, the downstate alt. list is moving...I just got a call from Ms. Levine this morning offering me a formal spot  this is my second time applying and this is my first acceptance, so good things come to those who wait...the phone call was pretty generic except she kind of hems and haws for a while, making me think this wasn't the call, but then she just sprang it on me...just a little fyi, the list is moving

Congrats ephman! You're going to be a doc! 👍

Hey everyone...i just sent in all the health forms/transcript stuff that they ask for the alternate list, only thing left now is the American Heart Assoc. BLS for healthcare providers requirement. For those who've gotten accepted, have you all had that completed already?..or do they accept people before that is met? Thanks for any feedback from anyone. gluck to you all

Hey Guys,
So it was my turn yesterday to get the phone call from Ms. Levine. She called and pretended like she was just updating her records and then asked me if I was still interested in Downstate and offered me a spot and said that they should mail out my paperwork this week.
My story: I was on High Priority ( as I wrote here previously) since April and then called last Thursday to find out whats going on. I only had all my health forms in by the time of the phone call.
THERE IS SOMETHING that Ms. Levine told me last week that might have influenced their decision: She said that if Downstate is really my first choice I should write them an email so that it will go into my file. I did this on Thursday and got the acceptance the following Wednesday. Maybe that's what did the trick???
Good luck to all!!! Let me know if I missed something 🙂
Hope to see all of you in September...
