Hey everyone...i just sent in all the health forms/transcript stuff that they ask for the alternate list, only thing left now is the American Heart Assoc. BLS for healthcare providers requirement. For those who've gotten accepted, have you all had that completed already?..or do they accept people before that is met? Thanks for any feedback from anyone. gluck to you all

Kenjamin, the BLS deadline for accepted persons is August 2, 2004 so you do not have to complete it before acceptance ( I completed it after my acceptance). I do suggest that you make an appointment for the class, it only takes a day so anytime before the deadline should be fine. Good luck! 🙂

CONGRATULATIONS mstalk! See you at orientation 🙂

congrats to mstalk and ephman...i also just wrote downstate another letter tellin them its my first choice. hopefully it'll help a bit. any other word on the movement. well this week is over..starts all over on monday. maybe it'll bring some better luck. also any chance on those holding a dowstate acceptances turning them down anytime soon 😀

i just got my acceptance this morning! woo hoo.

on another note- is community cpr the same as a BLS class? I signed up for a community cpr class because that is what buffalo required but now that i've been accepted to downstate i'm not sure if it will fulfill the requirement. any thoughts?

Congratulations vgirl! I think as long as the course is through the American Heart Association it should be the same thing - but it never hurts to call them and ask.

Congratulations Vgirl!!!!
See you in September.
All you need is a certification in CPR from American Heart Association, but when I went to get mine the teacher told us that it was a course for health providers, so maybe there is a difference and maybe you should call and check.

hey, long time reader, first time poster. Seems like ppl that post are getting accepted, so here's mine! Im also on the Alternate list. I'd definitely suggest faxing the office over emailing. I've faxed most of my LOI and update letters, as ive had trouble with writing emails to Downstate in the past.

Thanks everyone! 🙂 I'm quite happy.

Yes i called Downstate today and they told me the BLS course is different from a regular CPR course.

Hope to see you all at the end of August!

BTW- What are ppl doing about housing? I'm trying to figure out the ideal neighborhood to live in (that is NOT park slope b/c its so expensive).

thanks again.

Hey everybody,
it's so exciting to hear that people are getting in and that the list is moving. i'm on the alternate list and i want to get in to Downstate really badly. I've written a letter of intent and mailed it via postal and also sent and e-mail (with similar content but it's not a copy)...any recommendations from folks about other things i could be doing (in addition to writing/phonning)?

Also, do you know how long roughly Downstate will be admitting people of their waitlist? i'm assuming all the way through July? In any case, i really really want to get in at Downstate, so here's hoping *crosses fingers*

does anyone know for sure whether or not downstate ranks its waitlist?

Downstate's waitlist is not ranked. I was on High Priority and got in after people from alternate list got in. When I spoke to Ms. Levine prior to my acceptance she told me that they are constantly reviewing applicants folders.

I don't really know for how long Downstate is going to be accepting people from the waitlist, but it takes them about a week to send you the paperwork and from what I have read ( haven't gotten mine yet) you have 2 weeks to reply. Some people get into other schools in the meantime and reject Downstate, so this is a pretty long process so people who got offered places last week could reject them in 2 more weeks. It sux but it also gives hope. Right?

Good luck 🙂

well guys i got nothing.. im prayin that something falls thru for me here. im on two waitlists but downstate is where i want to go so badly. i've done everything i could..all my paperwork has been completed. its all about this waiting game...and its a struggle..not to mention takes a lot out of you. well we cant lose hope right..good luck guys. hopefully ill be there with the rest of you in august.

any news/acceptances?

My guess is that they are going through a refractory period. They have put out a bunch of acceptances to people who were waitlisted and now they are waiting for responses from them. I guess there will be some additional movement shortly. Of course this is only an assumption and you know what they say about assumptions.

Good luck to all.

Has anyone who has been on 'hold' received any kind of notification? They promised late May / early June, but I still haven't heard anything. Any other people on 'hold' or recently taken off hold?

I got the "alternate" package with medical forms and stuff...but I don't know what that means really?? You'd think if they send you all that stuff and you have to go out of your way to make doctor's appointments and whatnot, that you'd be kinda close to getting in...no? Ah well....waitwaitwait 😎

I was on put on Hold in March and on May 21st was made an alternate. I received the financial, health and BLS package to complete. I'm almost done with everything but have yet to hear back. It is quite a big hoop to jump through, since I'm only an alternate but what else can a person do. I'm sure a ton of people in the entering class come off of the Waitlist.

I think you should hear from them soon because in my alternate package, it said i had to get transcripts and health forms in by July 1 to remain on the alternate list.

Still on hold beatmaster, and still havent heard anything. I got that email too, and called them last week, to which they replied that i should hear back soon. That July 1st stuff is a little upsetting though. I dont know, I really want to go to Downstate.

I got the alternate list offer today. I faxed back the response form to indicate that I'm interesting in being put on the alternate list. The health forms are due very soon.

Just got a call from Ms. Levine. I was on the alternate list and got an offer! I think I'll see you guys there!
Btw if anyone's interested, I got the forms at the end of May, but I didn't fill anything out except the form that I faxed back at the beginning of June.

still have no word yet from downstate. anyone esle hear anything? what a hit.

I faxed back the alternate list response form several days ago. Scrambling to get the health forms in quickly.

Anyone know what the grading policy is at Downstate?
honors/high pass/ pass?
thanks so much.

another week has passed and still no news. anyone have any idea if there's been some recent movement or if its on hold until after 4th july. oh man this is such a long wait

Those waiting for Downstate--

I got off the waitlist this past Tues. (got the phone call from Ms. Levine). It was about two weeks after I faxed the paper saying I was interested in remaining on the alternate list. So, though I know it's hard be patient because the list is moving. (Although I am still waiting for the official papers in the mail).
Does anyone know exactly what is in the packet they mail to people who get off the waitlist?
Good Luck to everyone!

BCQueen, How long did they give you to accept to acceptance?

--Beastmaster
They gave me 2 weeks (I don't know if it's 2 weeks after the phone call or 2 weeks after I get the acceptance packet).

hey everyone,

I just went to my doc, and he said my lab results were going to take a while. How long does it take to get back the hepatitis B surface antigen test results back? I'm freaking out because i might not get them back by July 1. :scared:

Get as much as you can in on time, and hope for the best. Hopefully they'll be accomodating and forgive the delay.

I will drive there tomorrow to hand in my forms. If I get a feel for how they handle these forms with respect to how soon they need them I'll let you know.

I really doubt that the July 1st date is a drop dead date. It would be a little ridculous to elimiate the majority of the waitlist because they haven't completed the medical forms yet.

Note, that you can not get cleared by Student Health services until you get your second Hepatitis B shot, which must be given 1 month after your first shot. So a large number of waitlisted people probably won't make the deadline.

I would recommend that you get as much of the paperwork in as soon as possilbe. By doing that you will at least portray some initiative.

Im in the same situation as a lot of you guys...got the alternate package about a month ago, handed in all of my stuff about 2 weeks ago, still no response...It kinda sucks for me right now because if i don't hear back from them soon i'm going to have to start moving my stuff to chicago; Finch starts on July 26th and that's the only other school i've gotten into so far.

Regarding lab results, it took my lab about 2 days to get it done, but i went directly to the lab to have it done (my friend's dad own's a medical lab). If your doc can't get it done quickly, just call up a lab near your house (I'm sure you can find one in the yellow pages or just by asking the doc for the lab he uses) and get them to draw your blood directly. It'll cost you like 50 bucks, but if it saves 15Gs a yr for the next four yrs(tuition savings vs. going to a private school), its money well spent.

im really sick of waiting around for downstate!

but on a positive note, at least its summer, the weather's nice, and i can drink beers outside!! enjoy your last summer while it lasts!!

i emailed ms. levine and told her i wouldn't be able to submit all the health forms until the first week of july, she said it was no problem. so i wouldn't worry to much if i were you.

on a different note, yeah waiting sucks. especially since i keep gravitating back to this website. i dunno, i dont have an addictive personality, but i keep finding myself checking these posts as if ill gain some kinda insight, instead of coming up with a backup plan. im going to try and be good and not come back again today.

Well, they read my 2nd PPD and supposedly cleared all my health forms.

I wonder how long now until I get a good news call off the waitlist :meanie:

I withdrew today via snail mail. So another spot should open up in a week or so. Good luck all!

well that opens up another spot. hope one of us on here gets offered that one. good luck guys keep ya heads up. we gotta gut it out

Anything new this week?

negative ghostrider...still praying that people drop out or something...I think SDN people are very passionate (albeit slightly obsessive) peoples and very much deserve to get in 👍

anybody hear anything this week?

nope nothing...although im worried that maybe i got a call while i was on vacation cause my phone was struggling..although they prob would have left a message..so most likely i got nothing..oh well keep on waiting

nothing 🙁

Maybe I'll hear something because I just put down a $700 deposit for a place in buffalo..... 😛

I am accepted at UB also but waiting for Downstate. They are holding the apartment for you without having signed a lease? I havent gone to Buffalo bc I didnt want to sign a lease yet & I'm starting to get worried that I wont get an apartment if I keep putting it off. Any info would be great cause I gotta figure out when I'm going to go to Buffalo to look around. :scared:

I spoke to Ms. Levine yesterday & she said that if there's any movement it will occur in late July & that it is not really moving too much right now. What gets me is if we dont get called until Late July, some people have to decide to give up on Downstate & get settled at other schools.

I signed a one year lease. but i would just lose my deposit if I break the lease. Some of the apts leases started on 8/11, 8/12 etc, so the worse thing that could happen is that you stay in a hotel for a couple of days until your lease starts, or get an apt that costs a little more. also, i think there are still some rooms available in the houses that are for rent. good luck!

i agree this waiting sucks. im leaving boston for nymc on july 31st. i'd rather go to downstate, but if i end up hearing from them the last week of july, i might just say screw it and go to nymc anyways, just because i already have an apartment, movers coming, etc....or i'll have to bite the bullet on all my desposits....

Keep your hope alive. Downstate is cheaper than NYMC even for non-residents. You can become a resident and save a lot more money than what you will loose on the deposit. I have friend's going to Downstate and they love it. It's worth the wait. One of my friends got off the waitlist, during orientation week at NYMC and went to Downstate instead. Just keep praying things to do happen.

Hey guys,

Hoping that I can shed some light on the whole waitlist process. They admissions office can seem cryptic, but intentionally so. From what I understand, there is a lot of movement some years and not a lot other years. They won't commit to giving you more information about your chances for acceptance because they really don't know. If you have a reason to call (want to make sure that the received something that you sent them, etc.), that is fine. But the office is really busy, so calling repeatedly to check on the status of your application won't get you anywhere.

I got pulled from the waitlist last year in July, so I'm pretty familiar with the process. Make sure that you return everything that they send you as soon as possible. If Downstate is your first choice, let them know it by sending them a letter. As is the case with most schools, they are looking to take serious students who are going to accept the offer of admission at this point.

I know of plenty of people who got pulled after I did, so I imagine that there will be some more movement. If you are still on the waitlist and got all of the health forms, you still have a fighting chance of getting in. Unfortunately, there is little that you can do at this point except wait. I'm sure that is frustrating to hear, but that is about the best advice I can give.

If you have questions, feel free to email me directly at [email protected] . I'll do my best to answer them.

Good luck to all of you!

did anyone else just get an email from downstate to reconfirm interest in being on alternate list?
