Hello all, I have just taken the MCAT and were wondering what my chances are to get into DO school. Here is my info:

Doctor of physical therapy
Graduate GPA: 3.75
Undergrad GPA: 3.2
Also from a very rural area (>1700 ppl)

(I know most schools look at last 120 hours, which is 3.75)

What MCAT score do I need to feel good?

In the last 120 hours, my science and overall GPA is 3.75 fyi.

They hold the last 120 more heavily but you still need a decent sgpa and cgpa. Can have a 1.5 then a 4.0 in the last 120 with a combined 2.6.

Plus grade gpa doesn't count in undergraduate.

What's your undergrad gpa

Cgpa 3.2 Sgpa: 3.4 That science GPA will be higher though as in PT school we took anatomy, physiology, ex phys, etc so that replaced the grade in undergrad.

oh you're more than fine with a 3.4 to get in somewhere. get the highest you can but honestly if you get 503+ you'll have a good shot at getting in somewhere. You may be able to get in to a new school with 500+ but I wouldn't feel comfortable applying

the question you'll have to answer is why are you jumping ship from PT. Did you just graduate? how long have you been a working PT?

I just graduated in Dec of last year. I have always wanted to be a DO. I had always thought about going but was really pushed over the edge when I saw how restricted the laws are for PT. I am only 26 also, so I am still pretty young. My main reason is that I grew up and very rural area, as stated earlier, and want to be able to give back to the community fully, and the laws restricting PT's do no allow that.

One question I have, does having my DPT not really help me get into school? I thought having it would make me pretty attractive as I have had high level medical classes and have shown that I can excel in them (3.75 over 3 years of school)

Need MCAT to really know. I would say you'll need at least 505.

nah DPT won't really show much tbh.. if anything it would be a disadvantage because it looks like you're collecting degrees. Doing well on your undergrad grades and the MCAT is enough to show you can handle the curriculum.

@Goro is an ADCOM and he knows better but from what Ive seen from him in the past that advanced degree outside PA/NP they won't help you

don't think DPT destroyed your chance of course, you can and will succeed but you may have to explain that one. Of course wanting to do rural medicine is always a plus.

having a DPT won't keep you from getting into medschool but I don't imagine it helping that much either

Thats a little disappointing. The school I am targeting is Edward Via COM. They told me that they mainly look at last 120 hours and the interview. Their avg MCAT is a 25 with a Standard Deviation of 4, so a 21 (32 percentile) is within the range. I guess it changes school to school no? (Sorry, I'm new to this)

Like I said, I believe you have a chance as long as you do a decent job on the mcat. I am just saying that DPT isn't going to open a door if you perform terribly on the MCAT.

You won't get in anywhere with a 21. honestly 24/25 is the bottom limit for the MCAT barring extreme circumstances. I think that you are more than capable of an equivalent of 27+. Just dedicate your time and knock it out. Also, if you are wanting to do rural target all southern schools because a lot of the south is rural and their mission is for their areas.

Gotcha. Thanks. Yes I am only looking at Southern Schools. LMU, EVCOM, etc.

throw in ACOM for sure. they're looking to produce Alabama doctors and the majority of Alabama is rural

Numbers look fine.

You'll need a really explanation as to "why DO" and not DPT?"

No the grades won't replace. Grad grades won't replace undergrad classes. Aim for a 505+ and apply to 15 or so schools and you will be good

If you score a 509+ on the MCAT, I'd give Southern MD schools a try too.
I would look at William Carey University, PCOM-GA, and Campbell if you want to stay in the South.
I don't know much about Edward Via.

The AACOMA's lady I spoke to said that my Anatomy from PT will replace my Anatomy from undergrad. As long as it was the exact class, it would

The policy is written clearly to the contrary. AACOMAS will most likely verify your grade entry, but the fact of the matter is that courses in a DPT program is not an undergraduate class. Consequently, it should not be able to replace it. Like I said, AACOMAS will probably not catch onto it but the gamble comes if/when you get into a school, because they will verify your transcript themselves. This is now going into conjecture but I imagine that the consequence of them catching this mistake may range from nothing to very bad.
