hello everyone,
I'm planing to take PCAT next summer and I would like to get ready for it, which one between Dr. Collins or Kaplan is better? and where can I buy Dr. Collins book?
thank you very much! 🙂

I used Dr. Collins extensively when I studied for the PCAT and took it back in September. I bought the Kaplan book prior to that and studied off of it, but sadly, what I studied in Kaplan didn't show up much at all when I took the test. I much preferred Collins over Kaplan.

You can find people looking to sell Collins in the Free Classifieds sub-forum here. They almost always sell it for around 1/3 of the full price, which is like $100. Only buy from the Collins website if you cannot find a seller because $325 for the study guide is an absolute rip-off. But then again, I ended up buying it for that price tag because I wanted to score high, and I did.

To be honest, Kaplan was pretty much useless for me. I scored a 91 composite with the Dr. Collins guide. It's a bit pricy, but you can almost always find someone on craigslist selling it for 100-150. Very worth it!!!

Kaplan sucks IMO.. if you can I would head to your local bookstore and browse through the Kaplan and Princeton review books.. there is no question which one is better, but at least this way you can decide for yourself. I have no experience with Dr. Collins' material, but IMO if you feel somewhat confident in your abilities (and have recently graduated or taken ochem/calc/etc) then I would do the Princeton review book. From my understanding Dr. Collins' book is more of an in depth review, and will likely be much more than what you need. Also the Princeton/Kaplan books give you some other helpful hints about how to take the exam and how to study smarter, not just throw the review material at you. That and you'll save yourself some money as the Princeton book is only $18.

Easy choice, Dr. Collins. Scored a 94 composite and would've gotten higher had I practiced the math portion without a calculator...I thought we could use a calculator for some reason, oh wait, cause I'm stupid that's why. At any rate the extra money is well worth it. I started really studying less than a month before my exam. Multiple sources is always a good thing as well rather than an either or approach.

Hands down use Dr. Collin's notes!!! The only thing I didn't like from his notes were those on the Math. The PCAT in October 2012 was heavy on integral Calculus (not the easy ones, the more challenging ones) and Statistics. Try using Dr. Dawkin's Online Calculus notes for the refresher on those. Dr. Dawkin's online notes helped me score in the 95 percentile for my Math portion. The math really requires you to know how to do mental math quickly.. you either know it or don't. You don't have much time to sit there and try different methods. I'd advise you to practice every day at least 3-4 problems to test your speed and accuracy in answering questions.

The Biology and Chemistry for Dr. Collins is GREAT!!! 😍 Truthfully, I just studied those sections and did the practice tests. It is really all you need!!!

Good luck and study HARD!

Ye gods, I just looked up dr. collins due to the hype here and it's expensive. I just studied using Princeton Review + old college notes and managed a 97 composite. The way I studied was essentially to do practice exams to identify weaknesses, then to study those areas. But the main thing was just practicing test taking.

I guess if you're really unsure about the material, you can spend some money on a comprehensive test guide like dr. collins. But otherwise save it, and just do practice tests.

Princeton Review is awesome.. and at ~$15 you can't beat it.. value wise and for what you get it blows most other PCAT prep books out of the water.

I got an 80 and an 89 composite just studying from my school notes. Studied Dr. Collins and ended up with a 97 composite.

Dr. Collins is the best. Kaplan is good of you had a crappy undergrad teacher.

Took the PCAT in July and am selling the Dr. Collins study guide (newest version, 2013). Includes all the 2012 updates and the full 2013 guide with tests and study packets.

Email me if you're interested! After using Kaplan and Barron's review, these packets are the best way to study for the PCAT.
