I am actually a student in the MPH program at Drexel right now. I feel like I am learning a lot through this program and am excited to start Practicum (real community based experiences) soon. Drexel is a PBL (problem based learning) school, so be prepared to participate a lot in small group discussions and write many many papers. You can concentrate in either Community Health/Prevention, Epi/Biostats, Environmental/Occupational, or Health Management/Policy. Every school has a negative. I would say Drexel's negative is disorganization, but they are getting better. If there is anything else you'd wish to know about Drexel or Philly, feel free to contact me. Congratulations on your acceptance! 🙂

How hard is the program? I've heard that Drexel is like borderline Ivy-League. Also, how much is housing? They offered me on-campus housing, but is an apt off-campus better?

The program isn't super hard or anything. Maybe the hardest part is managing your free time. The amount of work picks up in your third quarter. As I said earlier, there is a lot of reading and writing involved, but, personally, I do not feel it is too hard. With that said, however, Drexel challenges you to think critically in your writing. As long as you're deeply committed and interested in public health, you will do fine.

Coming to the east coast from the west coast for the first time, I knew nothing about the area, so I opted for on-campus housing. The on-campus housing for Center City Drexel (where the MPH program is based) is Stiles Hall. It is right across the street from where you take classes. It is apartment-style living. I live in a three bed room that costs $2200 a person per quarter. I think 2 bedrooms are about $400 extra a quarter and 1 bedrooms are the most expensive. The apartment rent includes everything i.e. cable, internet, A/C, electricity, etc. I do not know too much about apartments that are off-campus, but there are a lot of students who live off-campus and are paying cheaper rent than at Stiles. If you want to go this route, I'd warn you to be careful in your selections because there are some areas that are pretty sketchy. Hope this helps! 🙂

Did Drexel offer you guys any financial aid? I am looking into, but its pretty expensive.

Thanks

Hey,

I recently received word that I got accepted to the MPH program at Drexel. I'm kinda hesitant whether or not to accept. I ultimately want to go to medical school and am not sure whether this is the right route to take. One being, its a two year commitment. Two, I'm not sure how much it can enhance my academic resume. I am very interested in the field, especially at Drexel in the urban setting. If you have ANY words of advice, It would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Aaron

Congrats to those who got into the Drexel MPH program. Did they notify you through e-mail about the acceptance or do they make you wait for the letter thru snail-mail?

Thanks!

Leave alone Ivy-League, Drexel does not even feature on the top 20 programs of US for MPH on the USNews ranking!

Anyone know if applying to the MD/MPH program at Drexel improves or worsens one's chances of being accepted to the medical school? I understand they are two separate programs; can you get into the MD program only if MPH turns you down? I was planning on just applying to the MD program, but I'm very interested in preventive medicine (a fact I'm talking up in my applications), and am now considering the dual degree program. Can you apply to the MPH program if you're accepted to the MD program first? Thanks.

Does anyone know how the class schedule is for the MPH program at Drexel? I want to sign up for a kaplan course monday 6-9, so would this work with my schedule?

Has anyone been accepted into medical school after doing this program? Thanks.

I also have the same question as the previous poster- I know some people who did an MPH and got into Med school afterwards but:

1) What or how good is Drexel's MPH [cuz I haven't the slightest about the school]

2) What are the chances of getting into a medschool after the program?

MPH does not significantly increase your chances of getting into medical school.

If your motive for getting a MPH is medical school, you'll be wasting your time. You're better off getting a MA or MS in Biomedical Sciences, which can significantly increase your shot of getting into medical school, especially if your undergrad science GPA is low.

Classes are held in Center City. If you want to live off campus in Center City, be warned that it can be quite pricey. The area is quite safe, however. Otherwise, there are free shuttles that go between University City (close to UPenn and Drexel's main campus) and Queen Village (where the medical school is). Rents are usually cheaper there, but the shuttle ride will take you about 20-30 mins longer to get to class.

There are definitely folks that will be going there. They just might not be on this board

Oddly enough, I just got my acceptance from Drexel on Saturday. I wonder why they wait so long to send out decisions? Then again, Drexel is one of the only schools with a May deadline for applications.

BTW i'm for mph in drexel. Do u think should i take the offer?
i guess u're going for PhD to Yale right? or thinking about Drexel in between?

Philly is a great city because you're surrounded by several universities. If you get really ambitious, you may even have the opportunity to take some business courses at Penn (Wharton), Temple, and even at Drexel's LeBow. It can be quite beneficial to take some business courses while you're getting your MPH so that you have a balanced outlook on the world of public health and the business of healthcare.

Mdjkim, what areas of business would you recommend an MPH student take courses in?

hey guys, i dont have the slightest idea how is the MPH program at Drexel. am from a general Biology background, with a little bit of bio tech courses.

i wana get into research, want to do surely do a phd. i have got thry Univ of alabama at birmingham, drexel, emory, univ of north texas and awaiting texas a and m. Emory is too costly almost abt 50k for two years. so its out of the option, am not too sure abt that decision of mine, knowing emory's reputation, would love some help.

please tell me

1. the best univ amongst i have selected, considering i want to get into research, anywhere in the usa.

2. is keeping emory out of the option a good idea?

Does anyone know about Drexel's policy on International students? Do they like to accept them? I have a M.B.B.S. degree from Central Asia and completed my licensing exams in India. I want to apply to the Epidemiology program. Can anyone shed some light on what my chances would be?
