Which school is better Drexel or Temple? And will any of these schools ever be rated in the US News and World Report top 50 med schools?

They're both of equal quality. Drexel's in a nicer neighborhood than Temple, but Temple has more name recognition. Don't worry about USNEWS Top 50. It's too arbitrary to even matter.

You have to be there to compare them. Temple has awesome clinical experiences that you won't get at Drexel, primarily due to the "bad" area. In my experience students at Temple are more proud of their school than Drexel students. I have also heard very positive feedback about Temple residents having great clinical skills in comparison to all other Philadelphia med school trained students.

i am an MS1 at Drexel, ok, as far as the clinical experience thing goes, we start this class called Physician&Patient the 3rd week of school of our 1st, we meet once a week, 2 hours, each session, we learn to take various parts of the history and then go the hospital and practice with real patients, and then, every so often, we are evaluated in the CEAC(its our facility that simulates a doctor's office w/ equipment, desk, chair, etc. and we are video taped interacting with standardized patients, after whcih the patient gives us feedback and our faculty facilitator gives us feedback on how we did, actually, the next session we will learn about taking vital signs....also, in the spring, we are assigned to a local physician's office to do actually do similar things, so all in all, i am not sure what more you could want as far as clinical experience...I mean, its true, we don't have gun shot victims coming through our hospitals every 2 seconds, but thats the price we pay for being in a safer part of philly

Is it just me or what? But I can't find Drexel in my 2002-2003 edition of the AAMC's medical school admission requirements book! Can someone help me?

it should be under "MCP Hahnemann" in the older versions of MSAR. the latest version has it as Drexel. i guess there was a recent merger between the Hahnemann hospitals and Drexel University.

Woah, yours is old school. the current version is 2004-2005. you're 2 years behind.

Thanks guys.
Yeah exmike, I'm definitely living in the past, huh?😀

I just found out I got into Drexel.
Since I've been accepted to both schools, I would choose Drexel because of location.🙂

When did you in interview? I'm waiting to hear back from them and I forgot how long they said it would take to hear back.

I interviewed at Drexel on Oct 14. The acceptance letter was dated Nov 17 but it just came today.

I am really very happy at Temple. I was in a similar spot last year - Drexel vs Temple - and I picked T. because of the clinicals. I shadowed the trauma service Friday night and got to see two GSW's and another fall. It was awesome.

Sure - the area around isn't the best but the campus is well patrolled and easily accesible to public transit. Your car is safe in a patrolled lot if you choose to drive. I live right near Drexel's med campus and it is a 7 minute rive from there to school.

Whoa attitude!

Looks like Philadelphia really wants you! Temple and Drexel and maybe Jefferson too!

Thanks. Yes I'm having a lot of luck at the Philly schools for some reason. I don't know about Jefferson though. They waitlisted me about a week and a half after my interview like they already knew they were going to waitlist me...

In comparison to Temple, I thought Drexel was superior or equal in every other aspect of the education experience. Drexel is private so there is much more diversity, there is also more support (when I interviewed at Temple last year I was really shocked at the unfriendly attitudes of the staff and students), Drexel is in a better neighborhood, the technology and facilities were better, and though the school has experienced financial hardship that is over from what I heard. One student I met at the Temple interview also told me that he/she would have gone to Drexel over Temple if they had been accepted at Drexel. Temple is still under probation. Unless you are in-state I would go with Drexel. Good luck.

I was ready to totally disagree, but I should ask you to clarify what you mean by diversity. If you mean instate vs out of state, then it's true Temple likely gets more instate (my class ended up 75%, but it's usually 60%).

However, my class is 25% URM and the only group I can imagine being better represented at Drecel is Asians. Diversity is really, really not a problem here as far as I'm concerned.

Support-wise, I'm sorry you met an unfriendly bunch but won't quibble with whatever impressions you got. I will say that I don't know any one (including me) unhappy with their class, and that as a URM (hispanic) I'm positive I get more support at Temple. You rarely need to deal with the administration anyway.

Also, I should point out that Drexel's hospitals are run by the for-profit Tenet, whereas Temple has their own health care system. I *do* have more confidence in the clinical experience I'll get come next year.

Finally, the probation was for poor facilities (Drexel's school *is* nicer, no question) and admittedly very sucky financial aid. Nothing to do with the education itself. Small improvements have been made (we now have wireless internet btw) and a completely new med school building is in the works.

PS - I was interviewed and accepted at Drexel, and would have been happy to attend...so I don't have an axe to grind. 🙂 You have to make the decision that's best for you.
