Hello everybody,

Just wondering . . . what are your opinions on Drexel? Is it a good school? Any good or bad attributes? I haven't heard too much about it . . . . except for the opinion of one physician who said it was "a very average school in a city with a lot of other better schools". I have my interview there next month, so I will eventually see for myself. Just want to get a rough idea what it's reputation is like. Thanks for your help and good luck to you all.

This exact question has been asked before. Just search "Drexel" it should come up, it was a very recent thread. You can read details in there, some liked it others didn't - what else is new???

I was actually surprised at how much I liked Drexel when I interviewed there and am actually considering going there over my state school in Georgia. What really stood out was the niceness of the administration as well as the dual basic science curriculums which gives you a choice. With respect to reputation, it may not be the best due to its past finanical problems. Drexel isn't known for great research by any measure, but I think it trains good physicians. The location is alright, being outside of Center City Philadelphia, so it is suburban. It depends on what you like. However, I had a great interview experience and really did like it.

i've probably written about my feelings on drexel, but since the search isn't working i'll briefly explain my feelings about the school.
i was pleasantly surprised by drexel. after going to nymc (a similar "safety" school) and being extremely disappointed, i was completely shocked to like drexel so much. in fact, i'd say i liked it about as much as any other school i've visited. the only thing that are cons for me there are the reputation of the school (not bad or anything but definitely not most peoples' first pick) and the location. it is in a nice suburb of philly with easy access to the city. i would just prefer to be somewhere warmer.
their curriculums really allow you to have the kind of learning environment that is best for you. even though the class size is big, i thought people were very nice and friendly and didn't get the feeling like you're treated like a number. all the students i talked to seemed happy and very nice. these were my gut feelings on the school, and i'm definitely glad i applied there since it took a bit of convincing on the part of my pre-med advisor!

Ditto on everything Lola said.

"Pleasantly surprised" is a great way to put it. I was definitely wary about the school based on what I had heard, but that's exactly my point: it was just what I *heard* about the school. Upon arrival at my interview, I was impressed by the technology, the friendliness of the class, and the great amount of support that is afforded to the students--picking one of two curriculums is just the start!

Moreover, coming from the pressure-cooker pre-med environment of Stanford University, I used to have this idea that med school and the underlying competition while there would be virtually the same as it was for me at Stanford and, therefore, pretty unbearable (which can potentially be true at some med schools). Thus, I was really happy when Drexel struck me as the type of school in which the student body is both appreciative of everyone else's accomplishments and pretty cohesive as a whole. Plus, the people were cool and well-rounded, definitely a group I personally could see myself fitting in with.

Moral of the story: Drexel is a school that has gotten some negative hype in the past few years, yet is one that, in reality, would offer a quality medical school education that I or any one of us here could really run with. 🙂

hope that helps!

Drexel is like the "Rodney Dangerfield" of medical schools. I'm a first year at Drexel and was really wary of attending because of the bad word of mouth. It's seems very good to me, but I have nothing to compare it to. I think the experience of being in medical school is pretty similar no matter where you go. I think Drexel may suffer because it comes up short in the "impress your friends and neighbors" category, which weighs very heavily in the minds of many pre-med students. The school is a successor to what was once Woman's Medical College, and there is a definite emphasis on preparing humane as well as skilled physicians.

Any medical school anywhere in the US is a good school. I have an interview at Drexel on Tuesday and I'm glad to hear such good comments about the school. I'm pretty sure that I will end up with lola's opinion about it being better than NYMC.

Ditto what everyone else has said about Drexel. Impressive facilities - very high tech. Nice choice of learning/curriculum styles. Friendly atmosphere. Down-to-earth students. Real commitment to diversity and 'humane' medicine.

Past financial problems are just that - past problems. Their affiliation with Drexel is a very positive step. They may not have had the same rep as other schools - but it strikes me as a school on the rise. I can see their rep being drastically different 4 yrs from now. Unfortunately they have to compete with Penn, Temple and Jefferson (and PCOM) all within a 10 min drive of each other. I think that's hampered their street cred - Philly's full of med snobs 😛
