So i'm taking an upper level biology course and recently i received my first exam grade back and i did pretty bad to be quite frank. Now my school's drop date without a "W" is coming up within the next 7 days and i was wondering if you guys would recommend that i drop this class and possibly switch majors or something? I honestly have no interest in tanking my GPA but at the same time i'm not sure if i will improve or not. Opinions please.

even tho we arent in the exact same situation, I still dont think you should drop the class. Learn from the testing experience and do better next time.

yeah but is it really possible to break through to at least a B range after getting a low score?

talk to the prof. find out where you went wrong on the test and see if he/she thinks you can bring your grade up. If not drop.

Find out if that grade your exam grade will be curved later on in the course.

How many units are you taking right now? Also, assuming you get a 95% on the next midterm and final, what is the highest grade you can receive in the class?

im taking 19 units, well the highest grade is an A. Additionally, this is the average for the exam with the curve, they said they won't be applying any curves at the end.. :\ Each exam is worth 1/5 of our grade, we have 4 of them and the last 1/5 is an accumulation of quizzes

Lol whenever someone says drop a class it makes me think of that sundrop commercial

if your going to be useless get off my thread

1. Relax
2. Really? Switch majors after getting one bad grade in one test in one upper level biology course? Relax.
3. Seriously... relax. If you don't think you can handle it, drop it. If you think you can put in the extra work that you apparently need, keep going.

thanks.. i just smoked up. I haven't done it in ages, but it definitely helped. I suppose these classes come by and always give people a pain in the ass, but i'm going to do everything necessary to pass this

Trying to recover from a bad grade while taking 19 units is tough man. Taking 19 units is tough, period.

Just be careful, and use your weekends wisely.

Wish you all the luck!

i know :\ im just hoping i can pull A's in everything else (aside from honors orgo) but even in that im expecting around a B+/A- so that would weight up a B- or C i would get in the bio class.

Honestly, if you are that concerned about your grade, I'd just drop it. 19 units is enough as it is...so you'll have what, 15 units left afterwards? It's still an average full-time load. Having ONE W on your transcript won't look horrible, but if you can drop a course without needing a W, then do so.

wow, I wish my school had the option of dropping without a W up to a point. We only had the drop/add period for the first few days of class. After that, and withdrawal was a W. My transcript would have looked a lot prettier for sure.

But I agree with the previous remarks - take these few days you have left to figure out exactly what your situation is and if you think you stand a decent chance of getting up to a B. If you don't like your odds, drop.

well i calculated my possible grades and im thinking i could pull off a B- in the class at least if i score in the C+ range on the next 3 exams and since i do fairly well on the quizzes naturally i could bump it up to a low 81,82.. but im still contemplating :|

another problem is i need the stupid class for my major even though it has nothing to do with it :\

Seriously is this what people do when they get bad grades? When I did undergrad if we did poorly on an exam you stayed with it and learned from the experience. I think I didn't even hear of people taking a w until I started looking at sdn.

I didn't know people could have such late drop dates... lucky. Mine was like 2 weeks ago 🙁

Good thing I don't need to drop anything

Could you retake the class next semester? If so, do you think you;d do better he second time around?

Since this class has nothing to do with your major (other classes don't build on this one), why not drop the class and keep your GPA up. Looking back at your other posts you are only a sophomore and will be applying to medical school after your junior year. Since you still need this class to graduate, you can add the class back in the spring of your senior year, after you have applied to medical school and have finished all of your interviews Hopefully you will have been accepted into medical school and would only need an acceptable grade at that point in order to matriculate.

If you decide later at some point to change majors, you won't have this class on your record and likely no need to take the class at all.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, well this class doesn't directly build on any concepts I really nee for my major but it's a core class and if I don't take it this semester or over the summer I will be lagging behind next year in classes for my major... I hate when these kinds of scenarios happen but I talked to my professor today and he told me I can pull a B- or a B if I just score in the C+ B- range on all the exams, so at this point it seems like it's just better to get it over with and not have to worry over the summer? :/

don't aim for C+ on the next exams....aim for high B or low A's. Stop making excuses for your self and put in the extra work. Maybe replacing "smoking up" with studying will help
