hi guys,

so I'm going to be a senior this coming year and I'm currently a biological sciences and economics double major. i'm not applying to dental school this cycle since both my bcp and science gpas are on the lower side (around 2.95). do you think it would be a good idea to drop my econ major so that i can take a slew of science classes to try to boost my sci gpa to around a 3.1 so that i can apply for the next cycle? or should i just finish both majors and then go to grad school to get a masters and apply in 2 years?

thanks.

Since you will have a year gap, continue with the double major - you've made it this far so it only makes sense.. do a 1 year masters or take post bacc science classes to boost the GPA.. if you do this you will keep active in your pursuit to DS and you will come out with a double major consisting of 2 completely different subjects, which looks good.

if you are VERY sure about getting into dentistry, like you can't picture yourself doing anything else other than being a dentist, then i would personally drop the econ major and boost up my sGPA and try to apply asap.

so this is what i would do:
1) drop econ major; boost up my GPA to 3.1 in school
2) take some post-bac in science classes during the summer and boost it up even more 3.2-3.3
3) apply that summer

you gotta squeeze DAT studying somewhere in there, if you havent done so.

i personally feel like i am wasting time if i spend 2 years in grad school for something i didnt see myself doing for the rest of my life... plus money too. wasting grad school tuition + losing the 2 year salaries you would be making if you were a dentist.

plus can't you be an econ minor? i am assuming if you are junior and have been considering being an econ major, that you at least got the reqs down for the minor?

i know people say that minors dont mean much, but at least you have it?

best luck to you! 🙂

thanks for the advice guys.

i only need one more class to complete the bio major, but i've gotta take 6 more classes to fulfill the econ major. i can definitely make econ my minor since i've completed all of the reqs.for the minor

the thing is i majored in econ as a backup plan, but i'm 100% positive i want to do dentistry, so i'm kinda on the fence.

Personally, I would stick with the double major. I wish I would have finished my other major because it was so interesting to me personally and all of my classes were enjoyable.

So in my opinion...finish up the dual-degree, and plan on doing a science intense Master's (SMP) or Post-Bacc and you should hopefully be ok when it comes time to apply.

will having that degree in economics really help me out that much?

I'm in a similar situation - majoring in Biology and German - and thought about dropping one of my majors to speed things along in my application process, but I've decided against it...

I really think that having two majors will at least set you apart from most other applicants (especially since the second major is in Econ). If you're really interested in Econ, then go for it.

If nothing else, at least get the minor.

Yo RU...

TRUST ME... DROP the econ not worth it... TAKE MORE BIO CLASSES... and increase that GPA... and other easy classes to raise it more

i heard that you guys have an HPO office... go to them ask the same q.

thanks for the advice

and actually the HPO office sucks. they're so misinformed about everything

and btw, were u in the same situation peanutb?

lol... Was i in the same situation yes about 4 years ago...

anyways.

Trust me you do not need economics major(cant do anything w/ it). They want to see a lot of biology classes. and they also want to see good grades in them. So do go taking 15 credits of biology classes in one sem. Do what ever you can handle to get good grades and take some easy classes along with them.

A lot of people say bio major or not it doesn't matter, but it does. even if you are not a bio major they want to see a lot of upper div. science classes. Even the non bio major look like bio majors who are lacking like 1 or 2 bio classes to get a bachelors in biology.

Take them and increase you GPA you can do it...

do not just look at major to set you apart from everyone... Look at other stuff such as numbers, extracirr. etc...
