As a MD applicant going into my senior year soon, a personal situation resulted in a sudden drop in my junior (last) year GPA. In my submitted AMCAS, I kept my essay focused on my unique positive aspects. I was wondering how I should explain that my last year's GPA does not reflect my academic level? I will explain this on secondary applications that provides me the chance to do so, but many of them do not have that option.

My professors are very understanding, so I'm thinking about asking them to briefly explain my situation and show support for my academic potential in their reference letters. Would that work?

Also, would medical schools add a brief letter of explanation to my file?

This topic has been covered before, but answers have generally been divided between explaining in AMCAS essay vs. don't explain, but the latter have not offered solutions despite a difficult situation. Thanks everyone!

Some secondaries have a section where you can write whatever you want (e.g this). I wouldn't send an extra letter. Just address it briefly in your PS and move on.

A note from your prof can only work towards your advantage. Your otherwise stellar performance in the previous years will only bolster your case. if any adcom looks wary, they might benefit from an update of your grades in the fall or spring to bolster your app

Dont explain unless asked in interviews.

I agree, I'd sooner tell AMCAS I turned 21 and my grades droped after endless nights at the bar than attempt to throw a pity party with adcoms; I also don't know your situation.
