Dropping classes after acceptance...

I have an urgent question for you guys(today's the last day to drop w/full refund at Harvard Extension, where I'm doing a "post bac" program...)

I already graduated from college and recently I got accepted EDP to med school, and in my interview I mentioned that I was in Boston doing a post bac at Harvard extension and working at a cancer treatment center.

But now that i'm in, i want to go do other stuff. i never officially said to them that i was at harvard ext sch. is it 1) ethical to drop these classes and 2) would they have the power to rescind my acceptance if i drop these courses? i have a 2 grand loan out for 3 classes and i'm not in the mood for studying this whole year when i don't absolutely have to start until next year.

please please please tellme if you hav exp with this or if you can tell me with confidence that i'm allowed/not allowed to drop.

i'm not a troll. i guess that last post may have made it a bit trolish. but i got my head straightened out about that.

so would i be OK in dropping these classes or not?

i have literally like 10 hours to decide. and it's sunday so i can't talk to the admission folks.

i'm really not trolling for sympathy or praise, if that's what your reasoning is.

DId you mention ANYWHERE in your application that you were completing this program? DId you talk about it at your interview? or was it more of a back up in case you did not get in so you could apply again?

IF you really played it up, it would probably help you get in i mean the program sounds like no joke, so they probably wieghed that in their decision if you did tell them, so i would go through with it in that case. But otherwise just drop it and nothing will happen, get ur money and time back

right, it was a backup. i did mention it to both interviewers when asked what i'm doing this year and both seemed impressed (it's open enrollment, not very impressive at all, but they're good quality courses) but i NEVER mentioned it in my written application - neither on amcas nor on the secondary.

My opinion: since you're in you're in. Have you given them the deposit to hold the spot yet? I think that's the critical bit of spot holding magic. If so I don't think they can drop you. Also since they've analyzed you already they probably won't do it again. I think you have a legitimate reason to not do the post bacc program as you are having a big change in career plans. They really might not care about what you do with that. However the risk is that they might care for some reason (which I wouldn't understand). Point is that I don't think they're going to find out.

I doubt that they would rescind the acceptance if you chose not to continue with your post-bac classes, unless your their offer was contigent upon completing a pre-req specific to that medical school (e.g., biochem, social sciences, english, etc.). If you didn't mention or list the courses anywhere on AMCAS, you could probably drop the courses without any negative repurcussions. As for this semester I suggest either dropping the classes or just taking one or two that you are particularly interested in while doing other stuff this year. Then get the hell out of Boston before winter really hits! 🙂

if u dont have to update ur transcript or send them these grades to show them that u have completed.... then i think its ok to drop.

I blew off 2 classes I 'said' I was goin to take. Admissions asked me about it, then didn't seem to care.

Best bet:

Call the school you are EDP accepted at, and ask the admissions secretary, or someone with administrative power over your acceptance criteria and ask them if it would change the status of your application if you changed your life plans.

At worse, they can say they accepted you on the basis of this Harvard Ext program your in. At best they can say, it doesn't make a difference. Call and find out.

totally agree about calling them. problem is today is sunday, and nobody's at the office(i called earlier) and today is also the last day to drop with a full refund.

anyway, i decided after the responses here and in talking with people that since i'll be around for a few months anyway, the 3 classes would be a nice challenge, help me get some background in science(coming from an engineering bkgrnd), and would motivate me to do more stuff. plus it's neurobiology, dev biology(embryology!), and physiology. so it'll help with terminology and stuff so i'm not blown away the first sem..

and hey! it's harvard!

But really, having those three courses reviewed before starting medical school will be extremely helpful. I know they've saved my butt more than once.

FYI, most school's deadlines are "flexible", so as long as you call and inform them of your intent, and that you might need an extra day or two, it's usually not a big deal. Communication is the key in this phase of the process.
