Hello,

I am a 27 year old non-trad who recently returned to school to continue towards finishing my undergrad.

I am taking Biology 200, Chemistry 200, statistics, and English 200. Anyway, I had a pretty drastic change in circumstances in both my childcare and my employment situation. Both resulted in less than stellar performances in 2 of my classes. I am sitting with a C in my chem and bio classes. I am considering dropping both classes, regrouping my sitaution regarding child care and employment, and making another run next semester. What are your thoughts on taking the W's and regrouping vs. taking the more than likely C's and improving my science gpa via future science courses?

Thanks

Hi Ben 52,

C's are pretty tough to overcome. They REALLY drag down your GPA. Although I don't think two W on your transcript would kill your application, you will likely have to explain them later on. Is there ANY way you can bring it up to a least a B? Before dropping I would suggest trying to talk to the professor to see if there is anything you can do to bring it up. Your prof now is just as likely to be forgiving and help you out with the situation as an Adcom is later on.

Survivor DO

If you have no other Ws I would go ahead and drop with a W and regroup.

It is much better and easier to explain how you made a smart choice and withdrew when you needed to straighten out some other issues rather than explain how you got Cs or Ds because of the situation.

Even if you have other W's you should just drop. Don't ever take a C no matter what they say, or you could always change to pass/no pass, get the pass and then retake for a letter grade.

The deadline to change to pass/fail has most likely come and gone. If it were me, I would definitely take the W over a C. C's kill GPAs... forever.

take the W's, they won't kill your app. whereas the C's will bring down your GPA a lot

It's tough one but it mostly depends on the circumstances. I think in your case it might be best to take the "W" and then reattempt the course. Life happens and no one will fault you for that in the future, well at least in my experience.

Good luck!

I totally agree. Better go with a W then try to talk your way out of the C,D or F to your counselor.

Go for the W's if you still can. Don't even hesitate. I had something very similar happen to me two semesters ago. Long story short, I am an attorney and had to go out of town on multiple occasions during the semesters I took Biochem I. I missed an exam in each class and also ended up having to pick up my daughter from preschool early which meant I had to miss the classes (only on T and Th, my MWF classes were fine). I took a W in Biochem I in the fall semester, then took another W in Biochem I in the spring semester (what a clusterf---) until my situation got straightened out. I never took a W in undergrad, so these are my only 2, and I know I'm going to have to explain them, but a C will screw you to the ends of the earth. I ended up taking Biochem I and II with the same professor I had W'd out of the previous semesters and got A's in both.
