Hi,
I had a question about the dual degree programs offered in DO Medical schools. I was wondering if anyone is pursuing DO/MPH dual degree and if it is worth it? I am very much interested in pursuing MPH. If I don't get admitted to medical schools this year, I was planning to get a degree in masters in public health and reapply. So either way I am interested in a degree in MPH.

Does one have to apply separately for DO schools, because I know for md schools, one has to apply separately for mph.

Thanks so much for your help! 🙂

Hi 😀 (I think I'm online too much....😛 )

You do have to apply separately for the MPH program, at DMU.
🙂edit: But it seems pretty simple, like, you just fill out some forms, and let them know what classes you'll be taking. You can choose to begin working towards the MPH the summer before med school starts, or the January during your first year.)

Ok, back to the books 😎

Hey Lucky!!
Thanks for replying. How did you guess I was talking about dmu? I just submitted the secondary and I was checking out the dual degree program page. So I can apply to the mph program after getting admitted to medical school as well?

Thanks so much for your reply! And good luck with anatomy exam! 🙂

At Nova Southeastern as long as you are in good standing as a medical student, you get a scholarship that pays all tuition and fees for the MPH program - I don't know too many specifics, but here is the schools web page http://www.nova.edu/ph/

Hi,

I thnk MPH degree is very good and my personal opinion is that all physicians should be exposed to public health because it balance your view of medicine. I just completed an MPH program this past spring and I think it was a far better experience than my undergraduate education. I think most med schools with a school of public health will gladly allow you to do an MPH program in one year as a dual degree with your DO or MD programs.

Again, there are currently great opportunities for public health physicians either in public health research, academic or clinicals. With a clinical degree (DO or MD) combine with MPH or DrPH, you are going to have a great deal of opportunities and choice of what you can do and where you can go.

i would only do a do/mph if it did not cost any more and did not take any more time. the mph degree will not add much(or anything) to your marketability in the long run. if you are interested in public health/preventive medicine, you can do a combined family practice(or int med)/preventive medicine residency. these programs are 4 years and you get an mph as part of the deal(from a brand name university) for free and while recieving your residency salary, plus when you are done you can get boarded in preventive medicine(in addition to fp or int med), and these programs are not competitive to get into. these dual degree programs are big money makers for the schools but an mph from x-com will do nothing for you. check out the other options before forking over any cash.
