do most people apply to a dual degree program under one application? For example, for the MD/PhD program do u apply for MD, get accepted, then apply for PhD? Or both at the same time? If both at the same time, what if your rejected fro the dual degree program since its more competitive that a regular MD, will your application still be considered for the MD?

It all depends on the school.

My understanding is that it varies somewhat from school to school, but for many, if not most programs, you apply to the combined program, and are given a choice of having your application considered for MD only if not accepted into the PhD program.

At least some schools offer the option of applying MD only, and later applying to join the MD/PhD program after your first year or so. You can find helpful answers from people who know much more about this than I do, on our MD/PhD forum.

Typically when applying to MD/PhD programs, applicants apply to both programs at once. When applying to a specific school, you simply click to apply for an MD/PhD joint degree. Then you must write two more essays in addition to the personal statement. One essay describes why you would wish to persue an MD/PhD and the other essay is about your research experience.

If you are not accepted to an MD/PhD program, you may contact the school if you wish to be considered for MD only.

Also when applying MD/PhD to a school, commonly you are also considered independently for MD if you wish (you can usually indicate so on your secondary) and many consider you for MD automatically.
