JWNDuke, what parts of the AT are you doing?

Going to do the entire length of the trail.

CANTDriv, that's right, I remember about the beard vigil you have going on. I applaud your enthusiasm over the interview and hope you get to celebrate again soon!

Oh crap you're actually growing the beard CANTDRIVE? that's funny becaue my mustache has been growing for 3 days now. I can't stop laughing when I look at myself in the mirror.

I'm going to be away for Spring Break too, but just couldn't bear getting accepted and not finding out abt it. So I set up an account with http://www.remotecontrolmail.com, they receive and scan your mail for you. I don't know how good it is but sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

I really wish you hadn't just posted that... it will take all of my will power not to click on that link. I figure I would just rather not know and tell my parents not to call me unless they get a letter from Duke. Man, we are getting closer and closer yall!

Hey hednej, i know what you mean about seeing yourself and being like wtf... is that what i look like with this facial hair... i was out with some of my friends last night and some girls started takin pics and stuff.... when i looked at one of the pics i was like omg... my beard... its out of control. I guess that makes the revised countdown ~ 18 days.

I'll join the discussion. Duke is awesome, and absolutely my first choice! Come on, Duke, I interviewed on Valentine's Day, are you going to show me some love?

I think 4-5 people (including my lovely boyfriend) got in from last year's V-day interviewee set. That's a pretty good precedent, methinks!

EDIT:: Aw, fine, Mr. Burns. Steal my thunder. See if I care.

Dude, the AT?! That's awesome. We did a teensy bit of it the first weekend back from X-mas break (and I loved that we could go backpacking in January here) but it was nowhere near enough to satisfy my hunger for that trail. Apparently the best parts are up north, though, so I imagine you're doing it in the right direction.

Also, since you seem a little bit like the crunchygranolacarrymytentonmyback type. . . you might be interested to know about the wilderness emergency/disaster medicine interest group we've got going on in my class. Some people are planning groups for MedWars (looks it up if you haven't heard of it) and the same group of us tends to do the whole rock-climbing/backpacking/doing stuff that might break your limbs spectrum.

Also: They still have campout scheduled?!! O_O Burnsie, Dookter, did you hear of this?!

I heard mumblings about it, but nothing official until now. I'm not touching campout with a 10-foot pole, which is soooo, sooo sad. Dr. Halperin still scares me...even enough to make me think twice about helping with the awesomeness that is campout.

Also: They still have campout scheduled?!! O_O Burnsie, Dookter, did you hear of this?!
Nope, I hadn't heard that. Obviously we're not doing enough to embarass the administration. Now to fix that by convincing my high school sex education group that we should teach them what 9th graders REALLY want to know...

You know he's gone, right?

Sure, he's gone. But I can only imagine what the students will have to sign this year to be able to help out with campout:

"I, Future Dookter, do swear on the life of my cute dog that nothing will happen at campout. If anything does happen, I agree to undergo a Halperin-style inquisition, background check, drug screening, retina scan, and rectal probe. I also realize that I am bound by the honor code to report anything and everything I have even heard about, which could possibly pit classmates against classmates."

I think I'll pass. I'm just not high-strung enough to like that kind of drama...

Hey, what, I dont count? I say we run campout and let them get trashed. It would be way more fun that way. And more hookups and gossip to entertain myself with...

Hopefully fewer men in ladies' thongs this year.

Not that I minded seeing him almost-naked. It's more fun now, though. 😉

If campout is back on, I'm all OVER that sheeit. Staying up all night and watching brand spanking new med students get to know each other and flirt with the wrong people and with fire and rafting and volleyball involved FT-freaking-W.

Heck yeah. I miss those days, back when we knew nothing of gram-negative bacilli and Hektoen agar.

Just out of curiosity... Do you Dukies actually know each other by name or do you remain annoymous behind your SDN handles?

these stories sound hilariously awesome... i remember at my interview they were talking about not having the whole camping thing... im glad its back on for those who are lucky enough to get in... good work on the revised countdown! 👍

I know who the other first years are, but I don't know who the upperclassmen are (on SDN).

I've seen diosa and burnsie do things you've only seen on sketchy sites on your computer that end up with you getting 65 new hits in your "AdAware" screens.

Also: I have more hits than Diosa and Dookter! hee hee. However, Burnsie wins the nerd-dom count hands down. Diosa, Ms. "I only ever post once in a while" --> I call bullcrap. 900+ is not "once in a while".

I would just like to point out that probably 900 of my now 1,000+ posts came on the Florida interview thread, where all we did was talk about how one would go about stealing a penguin from the antarctic, if it would be worse to have your parents walk in on you having sex or you walk in on your parents having sex (the winner was walking in on your grandparents), and the holiday glory of mint M&Ms.

But to make sure you know i'm still a nerd, one of the girls I met on the interview trail was from that thread and has become one of my good friends. She's even more sarcastic than I am, which I find quite impressive.

1.) Burns, you never sleep here anymore. *****. What if I get scared in the middle of the night? Too bad this is less funny since everyone knows you sleep at your boyfriend's house because you've mentioned him 3,000 times.
2.) Pa-gemma, like burns, I posted a lot more when I actually was a pre-allo. I still, however, do not go on SDN during lecture. So there.

Touche, salesman. Two - Chez.

Mmm, two restaurants are better than one. FOODAGE! *HOMPH*

*awkward silence from duke wannabes who are not in on the inside jokes*

*thinking of how to restart discussion not pertaining to SDN pre-allo posts and spending the night at eachothers' houses* :scared: :scared: :scared:

ya so almost 17 days no aye guys??? holler! 😳

Hah, sorry. We have a test Monday, so we're all sitting around procrastinating...

Procrastinating?!?!?! I am working hard trying to learn SOMETHING about micro. Now I remember why I hated micro in undergrad.... At least the other stuff is cool....

LOL...its all good. What is yalls test in?

It's the first test of this block, which is Body and Disease. So we are two weeks into pathology, immunology, and microbiology. It's actually cool [except the micro]. We'll see how it goes.

Shouldn't you be somewhere with a cerain someone? Or do you check SDN on dates now?

She's with Peter's g/f. The only person I'm on a date with right now is Will. We're in the CTL, and we even both ate food from Duke North for dinner.....so I guess it could be considered a date....ha ha.

bwuahahahaha  nice one

byong, it turns out then when i was interviewing at duke at the end of november, it also snowed in tx on the day of my interview in nc (turns out the weather in nc is apparently much better than tx)... oh well.

husky, you always beat me to the punch on this countdown thing... good work! ill try harder next time... i must have fallen asleep at the wheel 😴

husky, byong, and jwn, how bout yall give your wildest fantasies about what you will do when you find out you got in on march XX 👍

hey! getting in WOULD be my wildest fantasy. if i get a good news, i'll probably call all my family first. then, i'll have a little get-together with people to celebrate at a bar. actually make that a big get-together. just the thought of it makes me so nervous and excited! i guess march 7 isn't too faraway. 🙂

I am not gonna lie, this thread is getting a little random haha...but nonetheless 17 days left! ughh I was preparing myself for march 4th 🙁..oh well three more days of agony

pagemmapants... the wilderness emercgency/disaster medicine interest sounds awesome. Is it just for your class or for all students (MS1-MS4s)?

I had never heard of MedWars, but it looks awesome! Are you going to participate this year?

ya but not only is it projected at march 7th, but we also have to think about the fact that it's going snail mail and we all live in different states so who knows when the first acceptances will be received... :scared:

:luck: come on march 7th :luck:

So, last year, they forgot to "review" the applications of a pool of maybe 20 applicants, or send their letters, or something, and we all got our letters ~2 weeks after everyone else. It was super fun. :meanie: :meanie:

Ok, sorry, that was mean. But it really did happen.

So far the interest group is just about like 5-8 people in our class, but I'm sure the two co-founders would be MORE THAN enthusiastic about passing the torch on and/or including you newbies come August. It took them a while to get off the ground, but so far they've had an EM guy come in and talk to us about triage (START system, etc) and the next one coming up is a "poisonous animals" talk from another EM doc.

I'm still undecided re: MedWars --> some people are going to the one that's on the weekend at the end of spring break, however I will be imbibing mai tais on a beach in the dominican republic at that point so I can't make it. There's another one a few weeks later that I'm thinking about. I have EMS training even though I don't have my Woofer (Wilderness First Responder) so I think I'd be at least somewhat competent. Plus I've watched a lot of MacGyver.

As far as application mail times, I know that the immediate area (i.e. the rest of the triangle) got the acceptances the next day, and then after that it was out to like Connecticut and Tennessee, and it took 5 days for it to reach California. I'm sure people will be keeping track, so you should have some idea when they're landing in your area.

Then again, there are always 1 or 2 people in a given area that get theirs like 3 days later than everyone else because our USPS is oh so wonderful like that.

I love how you MS-1s are keeping us neurotic, but hopeful MS-0s company. 👍

oh man... i bet that sucked/really freakin ruled as a surprise. what is with the usps?

16 days... as of monday, which is technically now in the central time zone... hollerz! 👍

Just an observation...I noticed that the dukemed update page removed the July 27th to July 29th campout dates...think it got canceled already?

so this beard is getting super freakin annoying... ive been sitting here thinking to myself... "the duke adcom won't know if i shave the beard that i was growing for no reason related to admissions anyway will they? would it even matter?"... man what should i do yall? 😕

yes they will know and it does matter. And so I'm not going to save my mustache ever again if I don't get into Duke. Ever!

Keep growing that beard! The admissions office reads SDN! When I asked why no one from my interview day had received a frisbee, they said it was because they were down to their last one. They gave it to me because I:

(a) was the last one sitting in their office due to having the latest interview,
(b) asked for it, but most importantly
(c) promised not to let my dog chew it up.

Apparently someone on here last year posted a pic of their dog destroying it after they were rejected.

We were supposed to get frisbees on interview day???!!!!

first off.. that is hilarious

secondly, i see your point. i have decided to go ahead and truck through the difficult times with the beard. if the adcom sees that i show such dedication to something as difficult as growing this heinous and uncomfortable beard, then they'll know that im ready for med school 😀

byong, way to be on the ball! 15!

... we are almost at the two week mark friends!

you people keep beating me to the punch..oh well, only 15 left! happy mardi gras!

My sincerest apologies for the lack of MSI postings last night.

We were all drunk.

Happy Fat Tuesday!

CANTDriv, you have to keep growing the beard! Then when you get in, I want to see a before picture (with beard) and an after picture (with no beard but holding letter) posted on here!

BWAHAHAHA!!! Good work yall. I was wondering where yall were at.

We had a really tough test yesterday, so having sacrificed our whole weekend to Robbins and Janeway (pathology and immuno, respectively) we needed a little bit of a break. 😀

At least today was mostly "Hey look at this organ and tell me what's wrong with it" . . . and "so you can have one of these and not even know you have it then drop dead without any prior warning".

I like path lab.

Also: no shaving. We'll know. We'll tell Richard Wallace.
