I am trying not to read into this too much but does everyone think the "targeted" date means the day they should be received in the mail or the day they send them out from Duke? Just curious what everyone thinks...

Also, what exactly was it.... Does Duke offer a spot to 200 applicants right off the bat... or less and then by the end they eventually offer 200 offers as a result of the wait list moving? If not 200 on March 7th, then approximately how many? And is 200 even the right estimat?? sorry, I'm too lazy to look back at what was said earlier.

200 was the number from last year given to us on the thread by one of the MS1s who is there this year. I think they give out 100 at the beginning and then give out the rest as people start withdrawing.

PS: I also just realized we have 100 spots - spots already reserved for people who deferred - MD/PhD students... crap!

I think that the FA dept here makes you fill out their own application on which you NEED to put your parents' info anyway -- not putting it on the FAFSA prolly won't change much since even if the FAFSA says "EFC=0" Duke has their own magical formula where little gnomes underground take into account your parents' info, your info, your birth weight, the current federal debt, and the wind speed velocity of an unladen swallow and comes up with something very different from what the FAFSA says. Sometimes this is good. Most of the time it is not. Either way, they'll need a copy of your parents' info & W-2s and signed tax returns, so it doesn't really make a difference what you do on the FAFSA.

I just spoke with Duke Financial Aid - they don't look at your parents' info at all *on your FAFSA*, so if Duke is definitely your school, you don't have to worry about that. However, I know that some schools do look at your parents' info for at least some awards. For example, you have to submit your parents' info to be eligible for UNC's School of Medicine awards. So the answer to your question depends on where you've applied/been accepted!

However, for Duke you also have to fill out the Need Access form, which does require you to give your parents' info. However, the woman said that the Need Access is processed in 48 hours (as opposed to FAFSA's 4 weeks), so you can wait to see if you've been accepted to Duke before you bother with that.

Don't worry about it! Just enjoy your time and you'll check the mail when you get back. Look at it like this... at least you get to go somewhere for spring break.
