23 hours for Monday's mail!

25.5 hours for me. Arghhhhhhhhhh.

FYI - Duke does not send the letters overnight, so they will take a couple of days to reach different parts of the country. You can actually go on USPS and figure out the timing (I don't remember how I did it, but I know I did).

http://postcalc.usps.gov/

this website allows you to calculate postage from one zip (duke's is 27710) to your own zip. it will give you all the options along with how many days. if duke sends via the cheapest method, i think it should take around 3 days to reach the midwest area. hope that helps.

You guys are crazy. That is all. 😀

This one only gives you express and priority though.

I have first class mail showing up as the last option. It's 3 days to Wisconsin, so that's tomorrow or Tuesday (not sure if Friday is counted as a day) if mine was sent on Friday.

Hopefully if it's Tuesday it will be an acceptance since anything else would be a horrible bday gift from them.

i don't think sunday counts as a day.
so for me i guess that means tuesday or wednesday.

How are they sending out acceptances while it says on their website that interviews continued until 3/2?

What about Friday, the day it was sent on? Does that count as a day?

I don't think so... but if your post office is open on Saturdays, Saturday might count.

Well, crap. I'm at home for Spring Break, and I didn't change my address because I'm going back on Wednesday (to work on my thesis! 😱). But now that they sent them out earlier... AGH! THE ANTICIPATION IS KILLING ME!!!

I thought Spring Break was supposed to be relaxing. Instead, here I am, stressing out about Duke and my thesis... in that order.

OK so if you put your own zip code in both blanks it will say one day so that means that Friday does not count seeing as how things will always arrive the next day. So for TX, Hednej, we have to wait till Tuesday I'm guessing. Unless of course they didn't send our stuff Friday and they send it Monday or Wednesday at which point we have to wait until either Thursday or Saturday. Either way, by next Saturday we should know 😱

Acceptances are sent Priority Mail. This means 1-3 days (usually 2). Rejections and waitlist are NOT sent First Class. They are sent Presorted Bulk, so this means it can take as long as 4-5 days to get to the Midwest.

Whoa whoa whoa... the finer nuances of mail were not on the MCAT so I have no clue what you are talking about. SLOOOOOOOOOOOW DOOOOOOOOWWWWWWN! Can you just calculate for me how long it would take to get to TX. I mean you obviously no 100X more about the USPS than I do. It would be greatly appreciated 😍

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to verify that the letters have indeed gone out already. I just pulled out my acceptance letter from my mailbox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited!!!

P.S. I live in Durham also!

Hey, congrats on the acceptance. If you don't mind me asking, when did you interview? Just want to get an idea of whether they are sending them out based on how early you interviewed.

I think even non-rolling schools make acceptance decisions in small batches year-round, the only difference being that they just wait to send them out. Since they are sending them out in batches, maybe they are sending out the acceptances they have finished up and send the rest out later. Also, maybe those final interviews were for waitlist positions???

Could the first year Dukies chime in on this one???

The last interview days were NOT for the waitlist. After your interview, the adcom ranks your application (interviews included) on a 1-5 scale. They obviously don't send out any decisions until right now, but within a week or two of your interview you already have a score that puts you in the accepted, borderline (waitlist), or rejected range. So it's not like they made all decisions for everyone on March 2...they've known for a while a good number of students who were going to be accepted, so they just sent out those letters.

OK, so based on what I've gathered here, acceptances are sent priority mail (which takes two days for most major locations in the US), and waitlists/rejections are sent regular mail, right?

that means that if we're getting good news, we'll probably get it tomorrow! if tomorrow's mailbox is empty, i guess that's a bad sign!! :scared:

relax....you cannot assume that the USPS will have its stuff together in any way..... not everyone gets the letters at the same time, you don't know when all the letters will be sent, etc..... bottom line: you have no news until you get something in your mailbox....

Yeah if you got a 5 you're pretty much in. They're probably sending those out first, then, based on the last interviewees, determining how far from 5 they're gonna go for those last few spots, and then figuring out waitlistees.

So the important number is 5. Forget this 3 days left horse crap!!!

HOW CLOSE WERE YOU TO A 5?!?!?!?!

If I get in... I'm gonna have a big 5 written in magic marker on my right bicep for second look weekend

:luck: :luck: :luck:

They should just tell us our numbers for an added fee... sort of like how you can get your fico score along with your free credit report if you pay extra.

Duuuuuude... now there is an idea

So now the new question is... how much would you honestly pay to see that number??? I mean honestly. And the money has to come from your pocket.

If it were me... I would pay $100 right after the interview to know all my numbers (granted I interviewed in Nov. so it's been a seemingly long wait for me). Anyone else??? How much would u pay?

OK I gotta go to an IM bball game real quick and cross some ppl, break some ankles, and basically drop like 30 or something... anyway, I'll be back in an hour and there better be some good stuff on this thread! HOLLA!

doesn't your credit score go down when you check it? so i guess it would be more like, check your score and get docked a point😱

I'd pay like $20 or so. I would be iffy on paying a lot to see how badly I got beaten down if I don't get in - but I could justify a $20 for that info.

This has nothing to do with Duke, but I ran across this amazing joke just now:

e^x (that is, the mathematical constant "e" raised to the power of "x") went to a party. He stood around looking sad in the corner. The host came up to him and said "why don't you mix in with the other guests? Maybe that would cheer you up!" e^x replied, "It's no use. If I integrate, I'll still be the same 🙁 ."

So there are too many new posts to take them all in, but just wondering where did you gather this from? duke website? or just what people have been saying on here...I just assumed they were all sent out regular old USPS mail....

so what's the score out of 5 based on? GPA? MCAT? Secondary? Interview? Those are just 4 things. is there a 5th component? do they all get equal weightage. I realize I come of completely neurotic. If I have you guys as classmates next year (fingers crossed) I promise I'm not nearly this insane. Its just a way to make the time pass...

i gathered that just from previous posts on this thread, i.e., it is completely unsubstantiated and i have no idea if it's true!! i'm just trying to come up with something to hold me up until tomorrow (or even later in the week).

but it's true...they could be sent in batches and not even all on the same day, in which case anything could come at any time. *sigh*

I'm not sure exactly, but Dr. Armstrong claims that after you are granted an interview everyone is considered equal. Which I don't completely agree with, but I think can certainly be true if your numbers are borderline and you're a great "fit" for the school. But if your numbers are phenomenal, I think there's a bit more leeway if you're less good at interviewing.

And if you're looking for a 5th component, I'm guessing ECs (with "secondary" being your essay answers).

My last name falls towards the end of the upper bracket and I interviewed in the beginning of December.

Since the mailman does not come on Sundays, I'm sure I got the letter yesterday. I must of checked my mail for the day right before the mailman arrived because there was nothing in the mailbox when I looked in it on Saturday.

Best of luck to everyone!

I think it's very unlikely that there are five components to the 5-point score, each with one component. Instead I would imagine a more iterative process: First your GPA and MCATs are combined to a single number, which is normalized to the five point scale. So, with high scores, you could start out close to five. Then, the primary essay, letters of rec, and activities are considered and given some kind of the score that has a mean of zero, so a positive number will increase your 5-point score, and a negative will decrease it. That is, the original score based on your GPA and MCAT is adjusted up or down. Then another iteration with the secondary app novel. At this point, a cut is made and those above the threshold get interview invites. From then on, they normalize a new scale. So, for example, if the cutpoint for getting an interview is 3.0, then those with 3.0 before the interview start off with score of 0.0 going into the interview, those with a 4.0 start at 2.5 and those with 5.0 start at 5. Then once again, the interviews adjust that score up or down.

This is pure speculation, of course. If this is the way it is done, the order of events could be very different. Here, your GPA and MCAT have more influence on the overall score because they are first. Maybe they look at the secondary app first to give that more weight.

Here's hoping for good things in the mail today! And congrats to you three who already have good news! Finally, I'd second (or third?) the call for telling us the first uncensored word from your mouth.

Natytillly,
wow! that's a complicated system. However, it seems to make much more sense than a mere one to one thing.

Non instead of a countdown (since the USPS is, at best, unreliable) I propose a count up. Counting up since the postal days the the first batch was sent.

Therefore, today is day 2 (not counting Friday)

Good Luck!
